Ever wanted to explore Orange County, but didn’t know where to go? Now that it’s getting warmer, set up a date with your friends to go hiking! Enjoying the sunshine is what SoCal is all about.

1. Crystal Cove State Park – This 2,400 acre park encompasses the Crystal Cove beach and offers multiple trails depending on how long you want to hike. You can park by the beach for $15 or park at Park Ridge Drive, which is free. However, the starting point from Park Ridge Drive is further from the beach, but worthwhile if you want to challenge yourself. The length of trails can take anywhere from 2-5 hours. When going up and down the slopes, you’ll catch glimpses of the ocean while feeling the nice, gentle breeze. The trails can get a bit crowded as mountain bikers come here as well, so it’s best to go in the morning. It’s great for a relaxing morning with your friend.

Address and Directions: Their official address is 8471 Pacific Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. If you’re coming from UCI, take Culver towards Newport Coast Drive. Make a left at Newport Coast Dr., a left at Park Ridge Drive, then drive all the way to the end of the street where you will see the sign. If you want to park right by the beach (Parking is $15), continue on Newport Coast Dr. from Culver until you come to the Hwy 1 – Pacific Coast Highway. Make a left, and after the first light, you will see the parking lot on your left side.

2. Bommer Canyon – A convenient hiking spot located within Irvine that boasts multiple trails and is home to ancient oak and sycamore trees. The trails are moderate with mostly flat ground. The shortest route is about 3 miles. Some trails are only accessible by guide-led tours as there are endangered animals. The guided hikes are free, but make sure you pre-register before going. The tour guides are known to be knowledgeable and point out features or animals that you might have overlooked. To sign up for midday and evening hikes, go to letsgooutside.org (Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks). They have one called a Full Moon hike if anyone is curious to see what kind of animals come out at night.  Sightings of snakes and tarantulas have been known so if you’re feeling extra brave, reserve a spot for their tour!

Address: 6400 Shady Canyon Drive, Irvine, CA 92603

3. Quail Hill Trailhead – This is a 1.8 mile loop near the freeway. On average, the hike takes about an hour and it is relatively flat ground so it’s great for beginners. The best time to go here is during winter and early spring months when the grass is green and lush. This is one of the few hiking locations that allow dogs.

Address: 34 Shady Canyon Drive, Irvine, CA 92603

4. Turtle Rock – If you’re looking for a short, intense workout, this hike is for you! It’s a short distance, but the slopes are steep. The starting point begins with stairs, but eventually the hills become intense to the point where you have to climb. Don’t lose heart though, as you will be rewarded with a 360 degree view of the city once you reach the top. It can make for a fun night hike as well where you’ll be able to admire the city lights. The entrance is by the playground park.

Address: Turtle Rock Drive, Irvine, CA 92603

Whether you’re looking to hike or work out, Irvine has many options. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and water. Happy trails!
