The semester schools have already put on their shades, while we quarter students are finishing out the last few weeks.Â
Summer is a golden opportunity for relaxation and reconnecting with friends and family while taking a break from academics.
Two months off sounds great, but if you’re anything like me (and the majority of Gen Z), many days end with the phenomenon known as “doom scrolling”.Â
If the only summer plans you have are digital, fret not! Here are some fun and cost-effective activities to kickstart Summer 2026.Â
At Home Spa Day
Who doesn’t love to take a day for themselves? Oftentimes, this looks like a day binging Netflix and browsing the internet. This can be a nice reset for a few days. However, this can grow tiresome if it goes on any longer.Â
Luckily, there are other relaxing options at home. Self-care can be an easy way to decompress. I like to give myself a manicure, soak in a nice hot bath or use the face masks and other beauty gifts that I have been stockpiling in the medicine cabinet. As mentioned in my previous piece on New Year’s Resolutions, self-care can look different for everyone, so feel free to find something that works for you.
Get Crafty
Calling all artists, this one’s for you!
Crochet, origami, beading; nothing beats a good craft. These activities can range from cheap and easy to more expensive and elaborate options (depending on your taste).
There’s a craft for everyone, and kits are available for sale if you’re a beginner. The Wobbles have a variety of trendy styles and characters to choose from, if you’re looking for a good starter option for crochet.
In addition to being entertained, you are creating something for yourself or your loved ones. So get creative, and look around your house for potential materials.
Backyard Movie Night
Alright, this one is kind of breaking our no-screen rule, but I won’t tell if you won’t.
Perhaps it’s just the film major in me, but I think a movie can transform a good night into a great one. All you need is a projector, a movie, and a dream. You can use a screen, a wall or even a sheet as the backdrop. This activity works for a small group as well as a large gathering. You can use blankets, air mattresses or pillows for a comfy and fun environment. So gather your friends and grab some popcorn, snacks and drinks for an amazing movie night!
Water War
Waterparks are fun, but they can be crowded and expensive.Â
A much more affordable alternative can be found in your own backyard. Whether you use waterguns, water balloons, or just a hose, water can be a playful way to cool down. You can divide your friend group into teams if you are competitive, or just let loose and have fun. It is fun and affordable to get a kiddie pool to lounge and cool down with some homemade lemonade or a fabulous mocktail.
Picnic
Ah, an oldie but a goodie. With so many activities to do in this day and age, sometimes, there’s nothing better than a classic picnic.
You can also cheat a little, and take some cute pics for your Instagram!
This might be one of the easiest activities to execute on this list, because you only need a blanket and some food or snacks.Â
You can set up your picnic in your backyard,go to a local park or head to the beach.
No matter what setting you choose, you are enjoying the outdoors; I call that a win.
Conclusion
Of course it’s inevitable that we will use our screens during the break. However, I recommend that you seize the opportunity to put down the phone and unwind.
Happy summer, everyone, and see you in the fall!
