Journaling might seem intimidating at first, but I promise it’s easier than it looks! All you need is a notebook, or even a sheet of paper, and, of course, something to write with.
I first started journaling during my junior year of high school. College applications were draining, and I needed an outlet to release all of my stresses and frustrations. Sure, I could’ve tried baking or playing video games. But I honestly felt the urge to just write down all of my emotions on a sheet of paper. I thought it was a bit silly first, but now journaling is a staple in my routine!
Four years later, I still journal! Being a student at UC Berkeley is not for the weak, and oftentimes it can be intense. If I have breaks between classes, I’ll make an effort to go to a library or a cafe and start writing down my feelings or what’s bothering me.
There are no rules to journaling; just write your heart out! Write about your favorite things, a letter to your future self, current or future goals, a college bucket list before you graduate, or simply write about how you’re feeling at that moment. You might find yourself writing a page or two.
Journaling has provided me with a creative outlet, something I can do to express myself. There are some days where I don’t feel like writing, but when I force myself to at least write something down, it can feel like such a relief. In a way, journaling has given me someone to talk to. And I hope it does the same for you!
