WHAT I EAT IN A DAY: BROKE BERKELEY STUDENT EDITION!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Hey guys! Welcome to my, ‘what I eat in a day in the life of a Berkeley student!’ For breakfast, I’m going to start with a classic bowl of my 8 a.m. calculus class that I can’t drop because it’s a requirement for almost every major I could possibly take!

Obviously, I’m joking! The idea of skipping breakfast seems like a crime which is why instead of waking up 30 minutes earlier to eat breakfast, I just eat during my 8 a.m. lecture… because I mean what’s the professor going to do if he can’t even see me from the deep depths of the classroom?

Typically as soon as I wake up, which is technically at 2 a.m., I drink whatever is in my water bottle. It could be a full bottle or it could be a couple of drops of water, but, I mean, at least I’m staying hydrated. Then when I actually wake up, (i.e. when my alarm sounds off) I’ll pour myself a tall glass of cold air because there’s no way I can afford limes and cucumbers for my water in this economy.

But then once I hit the road for my first class of the day I’ll make sure to stop by The Bear Market to grab my new all-time favorite breakfast: granola bars. I mean who needs scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast when you can have a 2×5-inch peanut butter granola bar that won’t stop your hunger for more than three hours! It’s definitely not the ideal breakfast, but, then again, it’s just what I eat on weekdays, and at least I get a lot of protein! All the sugar is also bound to keep me awake.

My classes typically end by 2 p.m, so I’m usually back at my dorm in time to eat some lunch. Most days when I’m eating in the dining halls, which is also every day because I’m taking advantage of the meal swipes I paid for, I’ll usually make a simple turkey sandwich. The dining halls don’t have lots of options for toppings so this is a pretty good option. However, recently I’ve been really loving salad toppings, such as tomatoes, chickpeas, corn, croutons, and green peas mixed with rice instead of lettuce. If I’m eating that super healthy meal, I obviously have to take a handful of the dining hall’s cookies and a tall glass of Dr. Pepper. However, back to actual meals. When I opt for the rice and veggies meal, I’ll attempt to also grab some type of protein, which usually ends up being whatever looks the most like chicken.

As soon as I finish lunch it’s time to sprint to The Bear Market to grab a Dr. Pepper. I swear this isn’t a daily thing; I’ve only had three Dr. Pepper’s this week. If I feel like I’ll get hungry later in the day, I’ll also grab some chips or candy because who needs fresh fruit when you can just eat good old artificial snacks.

Then like every classic ‘gym bro’ I immediately stop eating after five, because my stomach will hurt when I go to the gym at seven. However, that won’t stop me from chugging what feels like three gallons of water when I’m at the gym.

Ultimately because I’m a broke college student, I try not to ever eat out, unless it’s boba, which I’ll drink if I’m not drinking Dr. Pepper. However, if the word Mezzo or tacos are said in a 50-mile radius of me, I can’t say I won’t be skipping the gym to go eat a giant sandwich or a ginormous tray of carne asada tacos with all the fixings.
