“Why do you even like the Kardashians anyway?”
I’ve heard this sentence many times from different people in my life. Mindless television often gets a bad rep, just as the countless stereotypes that come with enjoying shows such as The Kardashians. For many, The Kardashians symbolize oblivious wealth, drama, and complex family dynamics. However, I love how digestible their reality TV is. But, what specifically is it about the Kardashians that I enjoy so much?
First, the sense of escapism. As a college student, I’m often plagued with stress, deadlines, midterms, finals, essays, and so many more things. Going to an academically challenging university can truly make you lose yourself in your schoolwork if you don’t find any other avenues of entertainment.Â
I actually enjoy looking at reality TV through the lens of self-care. For a couple of hours in the day, I can turn on my iPad, and click on “The Kardashians” while I grab a charcuterie snack, turning my mind off and away from all my other responsibilities.Â
Yes, turning your brain off might seem impossible, but mindless television has helped me realize the importance of balancing academics and enjoyment. To many, the Kardashians are materialistic or vapid, and their problems might seem little. However, watching people publicly navigate through interpersonal drama is also extremely informative.Â
I can definitely say I’ve learned a thing or two about relationships, friendships, and different perspectives from watching The Kardashians. Whether it’s Kim dealing with relationship troubles, or Kourtney hashing out a fight with her sisters, it’s a comfort to step out of my own life for a bit to tune into someone else’s.
In an era where we’re constantly bombarded with work, sometimes we just need to enjoy something easy. Watching and enjoying The Kardashians isn’t about intellectual engagement, it’s about relaxation. You don’t need to think hard like you do during lectures or a quiz; you just get to sit back and enjoy the ride.
