FOUR OUTDOOR SPRINGTIME ACTIVITIES TO DO AFTER A LONG DAY

As the air gets warmer and the leaves grow back onto trees, spending time outdoors allows me to fully enjoy and embrace the beauty that is spring. A series of beautiful colors from all types of flowers come up in full bloom, and sunshine is no longer embraced by clouds. Spending this time outdoors has boosted my mental health considerably, and here are five of my favorite activities to do when April arrives.

1. Strawberry Picking

With winter rains and spring sunshine, produce, especially berries, become abundant. All over California, some places even just two hours away by car, allow for customers to pick their own fruit. Tasting the juice of fruit, still warm and plump from being in the sun, is something store-bought fruits just cannot compete with. Grab a basket, a friend, and enjoy eating berries while listening to the sound of honeybees and tasting pure bliss.

2. Farmer’s Markets

Supporting local producers is something that has always been important to me and prominent in my community. Finding a farmer’s market full of fruits, veggies, baked goods, and smoked meats allows you to fill your pantry while also connecting with the small business owners around you. Make it a side quest and grab a coffee, buy some flowers, and enjoy the bands playing for customers as they shop.

3. Beach Days

Before it gets too hot, a beach day is the perfect way to destress. Soaking in the sun and listening to the waves provides a sense of tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere. Take it as an opportunity to wear a super cute bikini (my favorite has polka dots) and enjoy time on the sand. Bring some lemonade and a sandwich, you’ll never want to leave.

4. Wildflower Walks

After the February and March rains, wildflowers pop up in every corner of NorCal. Even from my window, California poppies sway in the wind, and wild lilacs can be seen attracting bumble bees. Seeing the colors of orange, purple, blue, and yellow brings my mind peace and awe. Enjoying a walk through these fields will not only sooth your mind, but will also allow you to marvel at nature’s beauty.

Springtime never ceases to amaze me. Feeling fresh and rejuvenated while soaking up the sun always allows me to go to bed relaxed and satisfied. Doing these activities is an amazing way to step away from technology and get in touch with the little things. Whether it be via fresh honey from the farmer’s market or sea shells by the beach, hopefully we all get a little extra sun this springtime.

Sage is currently a student at UC Berkeley studying Political Economy. That might sound intense (and it definitely keeps her busy), she has always been fascinated by how laws, politics, and money shape the world around us. When she's not writing, you can find her working on social media gigs or watch puppy videos.

When she's not working or studying, Sage looks into niche history facts and wanders around Berkeley in search of the best chai lattes. She's also been involved in community work for years, from volunteering at local food pantries to being part of Girl Scouts. At the end of the day, she's happiest when she's learning something new, creating memories, and connecting with fellow writers!
