As a college student, going to classes, attending meetings, and studying in the library can sometimes feel repetitive and unfulfilling. When I’m feeling stuck and can’t travel due to time, money, or lack of company — I look for ways to break the routine. Luckily, there’s always something new to discover in my own town. Here are a few ways to act like a tourist in Berkeley and explore all the city has to offer.
1. Eat something new
Berkeley has an amazing food scene, from international cuisines to quirky local spots. To shake things up, I try a new restaurant, coffee shop, or street food vendor. Trying something new gives me that sense of adventure, and you don’t need to be a tourist to enjoy fresh flavors. Sometimes, stepping out of your usual routine is all it takes to make a meal exciting.
2. Take a class
As a college student, there’s always more to learn, but it’s fun to mix it up by taking a class outside my regular curriculum. Berkeley offers tons of classes open to the public like cooking, art, yoga, and photography. It’s a great way to step out of the academic mindset, try something new, and even meet new people. Plus, you might discover a hidden talent you didn’t know you had!
3. go outside
One of the simplest ways to break the monotony is by spending time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking in the Berkeley Hills, strolling through campus, or visiting a nearby park – being outside is a great way to recharge. Nature offers a much-needed change of pace, and a short walk in a new area can give you that fresh, travel-like feeling without leaving your city.
4. visit a local museum or gallery
Chances are, you haven’t visited all the museums and galleries in your town. Berkeley has a number of them that are worth checking out, like the Berkeley Art Museum or the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology. These places often have new exhibitions or events that are perfect for a spontaneous adventure. Exploring local culture is a way to uncover hidden treasures right in your backyard.
5. plan a day with no agenda
Sometimes, the best way to feel like a tourist is to have no plans at all. Take a weekend or a free afternoon to wander around Berkeley without any specific destination. Start at a coffee shop (or fun drink of your choice), then follow your curiosity down unfamiliar streets, pop into new shops, or visit a random park. Embracing spontaneity allows you to explore your town from a fresh perspective.
6. attend local events
Berkeley is always buzzing with activity from street fairs to free concerts in the park. There’s always something happening, whether it’s a food festival, film screening, or live performance. Check out the local event calendar and attend something new.
Sometimes, the best adventures aren’t in far-off places — they’re right at home. Exploring your own town allows you to see it through fresh eyes and break the routine of everyday life. It’s easy to get stuck in the grind, but being a tourist in your own city you can make everyday life feel like an exciting adventure. So, next time you’re feeling bored or uninspired: get out there and explore what your town has to offer. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ve been missing.
