Some people say it’s important to do things that make you happy after a breakup, like listening to those favorite songs that always put you in a good mood. But sometimes, we just need a good cry.

Even famous songwriters go through messy breakups. Somehow, though, they manage to turn their sadness into an amazing top-hit song and make millions. Here are some of my favorite, relatable, sad songs to get us through the painful breakup period before we move on to something better:

1. “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars

Made by the expert in beautiful love songs, this song really encapsulates the feelings of regret and reminiscing. It’s always relatable, whether you’re the heartbreaker or the heartbroken. This song feels like looking back at old pictures of good times. Sometimes, one thinks about what they could have done differently in certain situations and that’s what this song is all about. All in all, it is a song about remembering the past and what “I should have done.” You don’t realize all the good moments until they’re gone, and this song certainly brings them back.

2. “Happier” by Olivia Rodrigo

Sometimes, the worst part of a breakup comes months later when they start dating someone else. Thoughts of insecurity and doubt swirl your brain, and you wonder, “Did I just deal with all of their crap just so they can be better for the next person?” It really sucks thinking that they’re happier with someone else, even when you know the relationship is over. Listening to this song helped me realize that I’m not alone, especially when Rodrigo mentions how selfish she may sound. Her album “Sour” has so many relatable breakup songs that it was hard to choose just one, but this is one that stands out.

3. “Too Good at Goodbyes” by Sam Smith

Why is something that sucks so much… so common? Especially in college, relationships start and end so fast that we can become numb to the repeating cycle. Smith describes that feeling of simply being tired of the never-ending pain. They sing “I’m never gonna let you close to me… ‘Cause every time I open up, it hurts.” Being scared of opening up and trying relationships again can be so draining that we get used to withdrawing for the sake of protecting ourselves. It’s a process, but you’re not alone!

4. “Godspeed” by Frank Ocean

“I will always love you.” Probably the most relatable line ever. Even with all the agony that comes from the breakup process, you can’t help but thank them for the good times. I mean, you were happy with them for a reason, so I guess you can’t completely hate them. Right? At the end of the day, people drift apart for good reasons and bad reasons, and holding grudges won’t do anyone good. Maybe it is better to be the bigger person and just say, “Wishing you godspeed, glory.” Everyone is human. We grow, learn, and change. Hopefully for the better, so, therefore, “I let go of my claim on you.” Thanks, Frank Ocean, maybe I won’t stay mad at my ex today.
