A Vancouverite’s Guide to Vancouver

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

There are few things I am disgustingly proud of, the first being my airport selfie with Channing Tatum (yep, that happened), and an extremely close second is getting to call the most beautiful city on earth (Vancouver) home. Although I may be biased, I really don’t think you can beat this city with mountains, ocean and beaches right at your doorstop – the hardest decision you make is what to do first! So, as a self-proclaimed  tour guide, I have complied a list of all my favourite secret hiding spots in this city. Grab your pals, your bus pass, and of course an umbrella, and go on an adventure! Life is good when you’re in Vancouver.

1. Lighthouse Park

Need a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city? Hop on the 250 Horseshoe Bay bus and head over to one of the most beautiful and tranquil parks in this city. Lighthouse Park is located in West Vancouver and is filled with beautiful views of the ocean, mountain, and city skyline as well as tons of hiking trails. Come with a picnic basket on a summer night and you won’t think life can get much better.

2. La Casa Gelato: 218 Flavours

This one is for all my fellow ice-cream lovers: welcome to your heaven. This ice cream shop liteally has every flavor of ice cream you could ever dream of. Craving some wasabi flavouried ice cream, or maybe garlic? You’ve found your place. The best part is that there are unlimted tasters, so after you’ve tried all of the willd flavours, you don’t need to feel guilty about getting your classic Vanilla.

3. Cypress View Point

Finding beautiful views of this city is basically one of my hobbies, and I have yet to find one that tops this. The Cypress Lookout Point is at the halfway mark when you’re driving up to Cypress Mountain, and if you go on a clear day you can even see Mt. Baker!

4. Vancouver Art Gallery Cafe

This café is hidden in Robson Square and can often be easily missed. However, you won’t want to miss this spot because it has great food, beautiful art, flowers and and one of the best open patios in the city. Located in the heart of Vancouver, it should be on the top of your to-do list!

5. Granville Island

Although this is one of the big tourist attractions in the city, many people only stick to the main market. Spend a day eating and exploring all parts of the island including the Kids’ Marketplace and Emily Carr University! Granville Island is filled with declicous foods and intricate shops and will surley become one of your favourite spots!

6. Cactus Club English Bay

Cactus Club English Bay is the perfect place to enjoy great food and beautiful views. The glass restaurant located in English Bay has amazing views overlooking the beach and is one of the best places to enjoy a glass of sangria and watch the sunset! As for food, I highly recommend the lettuce wraps and fish tacos.

I hope you have enjoyed my Vancouverite’s Guide to this fantastic city, and that you have the chance to check out some of these awesome places. Vancouver is full of so many different attractions for all types of people that I promise you will never get bored. Vancouver will soon become one of your favourite places, and if you are ever worried about fitting in, just talk about how much you love sushi and green juice and you’ll be one of us in no time.
