A Tale of Passion: Umang Khandelwal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Umang Khandelwal. She smiled and sipped her coffee, as we discussed being students at UBC. We bonded over similar childhood experiences, having both been raised as third culture kids. Even before we met face to face, I had heard much about Umang’s comprehensive campus involvement in the faculty of Arts. Since her first year at UBC, Umang has formed a huge social network. Interestingly, an Arts degree was not her initial academic interest, as Umang began her UBC career in Sciences. In her second year, Umang found her calling in International Relations, and decided to switch majors. For her, passion was the force that paved way towards a career in the humanities.

Having served in prestigious positions with the AMS, Model United Nations, Arts Coordinator of UBC Research Opportunities, and a former delegate of the IMF spring meeting, Umang carries with her an impressive resume. What is more impressive, however, is her desire to always be reaching, driven to do the work she does. The stories she shared are fueld by passion. For instance, asked about one of the most notable experiences she has had, Umang talks about her work in Britain in the House of Lords. She sees a continuous problem in women’s electoral presence and political participation. She continues by talking about how many social issues are translated into politics as well. I felt genuinely inspired by her impact and involvement.

She has said that her experiences were fruitful and challenging, which has subsequently shaped her character. Asked about the big takeaway of her three years at UBC, she said, “The most important thing is to be aware of yourself to make sure you’re in a healthy state of mind and body– taking care of your total wellbeing comes first. Apply for things that interest you. Drive yourself to find experiences where you could have impact and make change. Gain skills for yourself because you like to see change happen in a particular area. Pick certain things you’re passionate about.

I am moved by her passion, kindness, and conviction in her voice. I can’t wait to see what Umang will do to the world.
