As you grow up you are always told to find yourself. Find what you like and what you don’t. Find your true friends. Find your passion or your true calling. You find all these things and then you get comfortable, but don’t get too comfortable. Yes it’s great to feel like you know where you belong, but after awhile you will find yourself stuck in the same groove. When you get that feeling that you’re just doing the same thing and no longer progressing, it’s time.

Taking the step can definitely be a challenge. I don’t think anyone will tell you it’s easy, but it’s necessary. Even the most successful people had to start somewhere and it probably all began when they stepped out of their comfort zone!

For you it might mean finally getting the courage to speak in public, going to that dance class you always pass in the rec center or trying a new food! Either way taking the first step can be hard. There are some things I think you should consider doing to help you take the leap.

Baby steps

Set goals every day towards something small but helpful. If you’re trying to be more social try hanging out in the student center instead of eating in your dorm. When I first came to college I always felt awkward when I had to eat alone so I would usually opt for a to-go option. I finally decided to just sit down and eat by myself. Of course doing this was just a small action, but it helped! Before I knew it people were asking to sit with me and I started making new friends. Something as simple as making a little adjustment can be the first step to coming out of your comfort zone.

Pep talks

It’s okay to talk to yourself sometimes. Encourage yourself every day to step out of your comfort zone. You can leave post-it notes on the back of your door so you’ll see them when you leave. Tell yourself you can do it and you will! Another way I like to get a boost of encouragement is through bible verses (one of my favorites is Joshua 1:9). Whatever it takes to get yourself going each day do it! This will help you as you move forward.

The struggles

Getting out of your routine will not happen overnight. It takes time. You might stumble sometimes, but it’s all a part of process. Don’t stress yourself too much about it. It’s important that you stay on top of yourself, but not to the point it make you want to give up. Going outside of your zone might feel awkward at first, but it will be worth it. I’ve even encountered the struggle of having people question my my new actions. “That’s so not you…” Well they were right it wasn’t what I would usually do, but it’s what I wanted to do now. Don’t feel bad for trying to better yourself.

The group effort

You might want to check with your friends and see if they’re feeling the same way about their routines. Are they feeling stagnant too? You all could get together and take the steps together! I’m not going to lie, doing new things in a group is a lot more comforting than being alone. When you work as a group you will be able to push each other to do better each day. Plus, what’s better than accomplishing things with your best friend by your side? #FRIENDGOALS
