Say hi to Travis! He is in his second year of Exercise Science and is a Residence Education Community Leader (RECL) for the Health and Wellness Living Learning Community. When he is not busy studying or running (literally) the Tower Residence Running Club, he is likely swimming, hiking or coaching soccer. He is also musically talented! He enjoys playing the ukulele and bass guitar.
Â
Travis was a Community Leader last year, but this is his first year being a RECL (Residence Education Community Leader). The difference between CLs and RECLs is that RECLs are expected to provide more learning programs for their residents (i.e. group physical activities, nutrition information sessions, etc.). Making the switch from CL to RECL meant that his workload increased, but Travis is very enthusiastic about his role. He wanted to become a RECL for the Health and Wellness Living Learning Community because he is a self-proclaimed “crazy fitness nut” and was excited to work with other people who shared his love for physical activity. He was also excited to have the opportunity to teach others about fitness.

Travis runs the Tower Residence Running Club five times a week and is a star player on Tower’s res soccer team. He is also involved in organizing activities such as spin classes, hikes, glow-in-the-dark capture the flag and midnight swims for his residents. He has many goals for the Health and Wellness community this year. He hopes that the running club will run up Mount Douglas by the end of November and then complete a 10k race in April. He also hopes that the Tower soccer team will win the res soccer championship. Ultimately, he hopes that his residents will learn how to stay active and involved in the university community, even after they move off campus. What he likes about his residents is that they participate in the programs that are organized and respect their community.
Travis is a great role model, especially when it comes to fitness. His proudest accomplishment happens to be completing a 68-kilometer run. Yes, he is “fitness crazy”, but he offers valuable advice for people who are looking to become more active. Travis’s advice is  to choose a sport or activity that you enjoy because it will be easier to stick with. Once your body is used to being active, he suggests branching out and trying more daunting activities. He also says to try to be active every day and to drink lots of water!
