5 Places to Study that Aren’t the Library

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

It’s exam season, and with that comes the struggle of finding a space to get some work done. While UVic’s library is a popular choice for many students, it can be frustrating to find a spot. Why are there so many desks without chairs? Why is that person sitting beside an outlet if they’re not going to use it? The list goes on, and that’s why you need some other options for study spots. Hopefully, the study spots below will fit your needs and provide you with a seat!

1. Pub

It might seem strange, but studying at a pub can be quite relaxing—as long as you choose the right one. It’s best to select a small local pub (i.e., not downtown) in the daytime when the business is not too busy and things are a little quieter. Pick a booth or table near the back and get to work. In addition to being able to enjoy a drink and food, you can probably reward yourself by enjoying the entertainment offered in the evening! Felicita’s on campus is great for this as well as  Smuggler’s Cove in Cadboro Bay.

2. Hallway

If you’re having trouble finding space in the library, head to any of the neighbouring buildings on campus. There are several cubicles located in the hallways of Clearihue, and other buildings, like David Strong, have benches and seating that is usually set up near an outlet too. If you don’t need a proper desk to do your work, this is the perfect option for you!

3. Mall

If you live far from campus or don’t feel like dragging yourself there, studying at a nearby mall might be easier for you! This option is probably best with a friend so that you guys can watch each other’s stuff. Again, going in the daytime when it’s not too busy is best when studying here. By studying in the food court, you have the freedom to enjoy your own snacks or purchase other treats from surrounding services. Hillside Mall has decent hours and a food court with a Tim Hortons and a Starbucks!

4. Public Library

There are 11 Greater Victoria Public Library locations, so there is bound to be one near you. Depending on the size of the branch, you might have trouble finding a spot but arriving early enough should solve that problem. With free Wi-Fi and no obligation to purchase anything, this spot is pretty much perfect. A bonus is the generally quiet library environment which is good if you don’t like a lot of background noise as you work.

5. Coffee Shops

No alternative study spots list would be complete without coffee shops! It feels like there’s a coffee shop on every second street in Victoria, so finding one near you shouldn’t be too hard. My favourites include Pour on Government Street and, of course, any Starbucks due to their late hours.

I hope you’ll find a study spot that works for you! Good luck with exams collegiettes!

Femi Tunde-Oladepo is in her final year at the University of Victoria where she is studying at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. After her undergrad, Femi hopes to read law and master French, Spanish and Italian. She is an active volunteer in her community and enjoys working with the Rotaract Club on campus. Having filled numerous notebooks as a child, Femi adores writing — especially short stories. She likes to dance (spontaneously), listen to all genres of music, laugh loudly and be the sassiest person in a room. In her spare time, Femi likes to window shop online, go for runs and reorganize spaces. One day, Femi hopes to perfect the art of soft pretzels.
