Pantone’s 2016 Color of the Year is….

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

It’s that time of year, ladies and gents! Pantone has released their 2016 color of the year – or should I say colors?

If you’re not familiar with Pantone, you can check out my 2015 color of the year blog for more info.  In a nutshell, they’re some sort of color expert company that releases colors every year, which are then integrated into the fashion and beauty world.

Anyhoo, I give you Rose Quartz and Serenity:

Anyone else feel like they cheated, a bit? I mean, it’s the color of the year, not colors. Oh well! There seems to be a lot of symbolism and depth behind the selection process for these colors, and the Pantone website says that “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

Peace? Order? Wellness? For students beginning the craziness that is winter semester, I’m sure we can appreciate the thought behind these colors! But the real question is: Do they translate well into the fashion and beauty world?

Every year that Pantone comes out with a new color, they collaborate with Sephora to create a beauty collection inspired by their colors. Here’s what it looks like:

The collection includes two lipsticks, one eye shadow palette, and a set of lip glosses! Now I don’t know about you, but usually I can tell if I can pull off a color just by looking at it. Although they’re pretty gorgeous,  I really don’t think they’d compliment my skin tone very well (I’m a caramel-y kind of tan). I was such a fan of last year’s color, Marsala, I think it looked amazing on everyone! Oh well, c’est la vie. However, I do feel a bit more optimistic about these colours will work in fashion, here are some examples:

Not bad, right? I have a feeling that spring is going to be a blur of pinks and baby blues! Aside from the pairing of pastel pink pumps and denim, I don’t really see the two colors meshing that well together – at least for my sense of style. But who knows, it looks like these colors have a lot of potential and 2016 has just begun.

PS. The serenity shade made me think of baby blue, and baby blue reminded me of light wash denim, and denim reminded me of Britney and Justin’s matching denim outfits. So here’s my gift to you lovelies, the worst (best) picture to ever circulate the internet and remind you how not to wear denim.

I'm a Shakespeare loving, eyebrow obsessing beauty junkie, who adores all things having to do with Harry Potter, delicious food, and good music. After 4 years I've finally graduated from the oh so wonderful, University of Toronto and am currently working toward a Masters of Information degree.  I'd like to think of myself as a modern day romantic with an unquenchable wanderlust. My current dream is to one day go on an international library hopping adventure! For an aspiring special collections librarian, that is definitely at the top of my list post-graduation. I am a frequent visitor of the ROM and love going see the Nutcracker during the holidays. As a Decemeber baby myself, I absolutely love the winter time, the snow, the holiday cheer, and the half coffee half hot chocolates I get from Timmys. As for music, my likes are pretty much across the board! From John Mayer to Sam Smith, Debussy to Duke Ellington, Xtina to today's pop hits, you'll find me somewhere in the middle. On a regular day, you'll probably find me at home with my dog Kacy on a Mad Men binge, or catching up with Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, How To Get Away With Murder and Suits- ps. I love netflix!

Lisa Chen is currently a second year student majoring in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (it's a thing - I swear!) with a minor in English and a joint minor with Singapore National University in Asian Culture and Literature. When she is not editing articles for HerCampus and marveling at the amazing content her writers produce, Lisa is an executive on the Arts and Science Student's Union (ASSU) where she represents and advocates for the interests of over 24,000 students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Lisa hopes to study law after graduation, preferably somewhere warm like California because Canadian winters are ridiculous and she loves high-waisted shorts. If you see her around campus, don't be afraid to come say hi! Especially if you love Adventure Time and Harry Potter as much as she does.
