5 Beauty and Style Tips We’ve Learned From The Crawley Sisters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Oh Downton, how I’ll miss you so! For anyone not into Downton Abbey, you really should give it a chance. I’ve fallen in love with it and there’s seriously no going back, which sucks for me because it’s on its last season.

One thing that I’ve always admired about the show was its wardrobe. The Crawley sisters, Mary, Sybil and Edith don some gorgeous costumes (it’s set in Edwardian Britain) and I’ve always wondered where I could find a copy cat dress! With the many seasons I’ve spent with Downtown, I thought it would be fun to look at what the three main characters have taught me about beauty and fashion, cause really – they’ve got tons of both! Check out their Vogue photo shoot:

1) Edwardian’s don’t like heavy make up

Not that the aristocracy had much of a say, but in the time period the show is set in, women wore didn’t really wear make up with the exception of a little something to brighten up their lips, and a touch of rosiness to the cheeks.

Now I’m not saying that we should do our make-up Downtown Abbey style (because you all know by now that I love contouring ;)), but once in a while it could be refreshing to take a more minimalist approach to it. For a low maintenance day, you could focus on one particular feature like your brows, or your lashes. Play your best feature up and let your naturally beauty shine through – it’ll do loads for your confidence!

2) A glowing complexion is everything

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the ladies of Downton have such great complexions, super clear and super bright! It’s no wonder that they don’t really wear makeup, they don’t need it all that much anyway.

To get glowing complexions like the Crawley sisters, you want to keep your skin care regime strong – definitely cleanse and moisturize at least twice a day. Another thing would be to use a sheer pressed powder to lightly even out your skin tone and keep you matte. Again playing on minimalism, you see just a hint of blush, which is perfect for Spring. That is, if it ever reaches Toronto – sighhhh.

3) Edwardian’s are all ’bout those brows!

You already probably know about my obsession with prefect brows, so it won’t surprise you that I’m raving about Lady Sybil’s arches! Groomed but still thick, Lady Sybil’s brows were kept that way to play up her youth, as the youngest of the three Crawley sisters.

Could you imagine if we got some Dip brow on those brows? EYE BROWS ON FLEEK AMIRITE? For Spring 2016, the natural brow is still very in, so if you’ve got that thick arch, just brush the hairs up, give them a trim, do a little general clean up and you’ll be good to go.

3) Hair accessories should be your new best friend!

I get mad headband/hair accessory envy whenever I watch this show. What’s great about Downton Abbey is that it goes through certain years where the style of the period changes, and it’s definitely reflected in the characters. You will love the 1920s style once you get there!

These might be a little much for your everyday swag, but on occasions where you want to dress up a bit, nothing says classy more than a beaded or jeweled hair piece. It’s basically a crown for us commoners, and I think that hair pieces like this are still SO underrated!

4) Pants can be just as classy as dresses

Once you start watching Downton Abbey, Lady Sybil will become one of your all time favorite characters!

Back in the day, aristocratic women would have rarely worn pants, but our Lady Sybil is a rebel, and definitely a feminist as you can see. I love how her outfit flows. Nowadays, we’ve got loads of options when it comes to fashion, so if you’ve been eyeing a gorgeous pair of pants, or a chic jumpsuit, give it a chance! I mean seriously, this jumpsuit is to die for:

The heels look pretty fabulous too, actually

5) Dresses, dresses, and dresses

It doesn’t matter if you’re an Edwardian or a Millennial, you’ve got to appreciate all the style Downton Abbey has to offer you. The dresses the Crawley sisters wear are so beautiful, they are pretty much works of art. I love all the little details, like the lace and beading. I’ve definitely got some major dress envy. Seriously, the costume designer for this show deserves a Golden Globe.

To sum up: You need to watch Downton Abbey.

Here’s a little bit of some Dowager Countess sass to draw you in (because she’s one of the best and wittiest characters on the show):

Cheers lovelies!

I'm a Shakespeare loving, eyebrow obsessing beauty junkie, who adores all things having to do with Harry Potter, delicious food, and good music. After 4 years I've finally graduated from the oh so wonderful, University of Toronto and am currently working toward a Masters of Information degree.  I'd like to think of myself as a modern day romantic with an unquenchable wanderlust. My current dream is to one day go on an international library hopping adventure! For an aspiring special collections librarian, that is definitely at the top of my list post-graduation. I am a frequent visitor of the ROM and love going see the Nutcracker during the holidays. As a Decemeber baby myself, I absolutely love the winter time, the snow, the holiday cheer, and the half coffee half hot chocolates I get from Timmys. As for music, my likes are pretty much across the board! From John Mayer to Sam Smith, Debussy to Duke Ellington, Xtina to today's pop hits, you'll find me somewhere in the middle. On a regular day, you'll probably find me at home with my dog Kacy on a Mad Men binge, or catching up with Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, How To Get Away With Murder and Suits- ps. I love netflix!

If you see her around campus, don't be afraid to come say hi! Especially if you love Adventure Time and Harry Potter as much as she does.
