Working out can be a very daunting task; sometimes it can be hard to create a workout routine and actually stick to it or perhaps even just the thought of working out in a commercial gym can feel very intimidating. Traditional workouts were not working for me. I always felt overwhelmed in the gym and as much as I liked being active; it was just not an enjoyable experience.

I started looking for a new means of fitness, and that is when I discovered the art of pole dancing. When taking my first class, the first thing I noticed was how supportive and positive the environment is. Every accomplishment big or small is met with cheers and applause! You are surrounded by people who want you to succeed which creates such a fun and upbeat atmosphere you forget you are working out. I am constantly pushing my body and testing my limits; I am stronger than I have ever been. Pole dancing highlights what your body is capable of as opposed to how it looks. You are free to move in ways that feel good to you and develop your own style whether that be sensual or purely fitness-based. You are in full control of your body and everything you choose to do. You can dance in sweatpants and a hoodie or you can dance in heels and lingerie; you are free to be creative and express yourself as you see fit. Pole teaches you to fall in love with your body, be proud of the body you are in, and appreciate everything it does for you. You do not need to have strength, flexibility, or past dance experience to try it; you just have to be open!

Regardless of your age, ability, or gender, pole dancing has a place for you. It’s more than a sport, it’s a journey and a community full of acceptance. Pole dancing is my outlet and when I feel most like myself. Pole dancing helps me get the most out of my workout, I see the results I want, it makes me feel good and I look forward to it. As challenging as it is, having a studio cheer you on makes forget how difficult it is and motivates you to keep going. Working out does not have to mean hopping on a treadmill and lifting heavy weights; it can also mean throwing on a cute outfit, putting on your favourite songs, and finding new ways to express yourself through movement! If you have ever thought about trying pole dancing this is your sign to go for it! All you need to do is show up.
