3 Ingredients to Avoid and Look for in Beauty Products

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Paying attention to the ingredients that are in your cosmetics may seem like a tedious and annoying task, but it’s certainly important. There are loads of ingredients in cosmetic products that can be potentially damaging; however, there are also some that have added benefits! Here are just a few to keep an eye out for.

Try to avoid these ingredients when possible:

1. Parabens

Parabens are used in a variety of products that you probably own (makeup, shampoo, moisturizer, etc.). Parabens can potentially interfere with hormone function.

2. BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

BHA is typically used in moisturizers, exfoliants, makeup, etc. According to the National Toxicology Program, BHA can be classified as an ingredient that can be anticipated to be a human carcinogen. It can also cause skin depigmentation.

3. Fragrance

Fragrance can be found in almost all beauty products. However, federal law doesn’t require companies to provide a list of ingredients on product labels that are in their fragrance mixture. Like parabens, fragrances can contain hormone disruptors. They are also among the top 5 allergens in the world.

Keep an eye out for these awesome additions to your cosmetics:

1. Silica

Silica is a white powder that is used in a lot of cosmetics. As long as it’s used externally there is no known toxicity. This ingredient is also used in hypo-allergenic and allergy-tested formulations. To make matters even better, tests have found that the mineral is essential in collagen (a protein found in muscles, bones, skin, digestive system, and tendons that gives our skin strength and elasticity and replaces dead skin cells) production and calcium absorption.

2. Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide is an important natural ingredient for sunscreen and offers protection from ultraviolet radiation. Another plus of titanium dioxide is that it is regulated and approved for makeup-use by the FDA!

3. Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is an awesome addition to mineral make-up products for people with oily skin! It’s a great oil absorber and is an awesome addition to finishing powder, blush, foundation etc. It’s fantastic for offering a matte finish.
