Mahraan Qadir: President of MAM

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Name: Mahraan Qadir

Year: Winter 2016 (I’m a senior)

Major: Business (BBA) and Computer Science (BS)

Hometown: Mount Pleasant, Michigan

Fun Fact: I’m a huge travel buff. I’ve been to over 30 countries on 4 different continents. This summer, I am planning on taking a 4-month backpacking trip to hit countries in east and southeast Asia, followed by Central America and South America.

Her Campus: Describe your role as the president of MAM. What does your organization do?

Mahraan Qadir: MAM (Michigan Advertising and Marketing) is a student-run organization that works directly with local clients by consulting with them on various marketing initiatives that they want to run or are currently implementing. As the President of MAM, my role involves managing all of the operations of the organization, from the recruitment of new members to finding and managing clients, to making sure our teams are meeting client expectations and are all getting the best experience they can from the club.

HC: What is it about MAM that made you want to run for president?

MQ: I have been a part of MAM since my freshman year, and since then, I saw that it was a club that I wanted to be heavily involved with. Ultimately, I wanted to give back to the club that I gained a lot from, and I also saw opportunities for the club to improve upon. One of my biggest goals for this year is to make MAM feel more like a community. We have a lot of really smart and talented marketing minds in the club, and I never really got to know too many people outside of my team, so I wanted to change that.

HC: What’s your favorite memory as a part of MAM?

MQ: Definitely when we went on a trip to the Domino’s Ann Arbor headquarters as a club-wide event. We were given a chance to speak directly with the CEO, see how various parts of the company were run, and at the very end, make our own custom pizzas at Domino’s labs. We’ve also had other trips, such as a Google trip, where some of our members flew out to New York.

HC: What other activities are you involved in on campus?

MQ: I’m involved with a professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, where I’ve served as the Vice President Internal and Vice President of Professional Development. I’m also involved with the Entertainment + Media Club where I served as the Vice President of Marketing.

HC: What is your guilty pleasure?

MQ: I’m a huge music lover and I pride myself on listening to a wide variety of music. I tend to get a little hipster with my artist selection. That being said, I have a guilty pleasure for listening to Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. I have more tracks from those artists than you would expect me to have.

HC: What advice would you give to your freshman self?

MQ: Take more classes you are genuinely interested in! Most of my favorite classes have been ones I took because I had room in my schedule to try something different. You only have 4 years on campus, so it’s definitely a good idea to make the most of your time here.

HC: Favorite place to study on campus?

MQ: I love this question. There are a couple places I really like to go. I’m on north campus quite a bit, so I end up spending a lot of time in the Duderstat, and there’s a great little nook on the 3rd floor that I enjoy studying at. On central, I’m always at Ross, so to get a break from the Winter Garden, I like to study in the Blau Auditorium.
