The App You and Your Friend Group Absolutely Need: Airbuds

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

One of my favorite topics of discussion with my friends is music. You can typically find us talking about the newest album releases, analyzing Taylor Swift’s lyrics, or creating new group playlists that are for any type of mood. Music is something that connects all of us together, and I know many others can relate to this sentiment.

One day, one of my friends sent a text enthusiastically talking about a new app she had seen on TikTok, called Airbuds. This app allows you to create an account and add friends, and from there, your friends could see all of your listening history and the music you were currently listening to. We quickly jumped on the trend, and all downloaded it. We were amazed to see how fun the app was, and how it allowed us to quite literally see what each of us was listening to at that exact moment.

Similar to an Instagram feed, Airbuds allows you to scroll down and see what each of your friends is listening to most recently. It will show a picture of the album cover, give the song title, and say just how long ago that friend was listening to that song. It will also show how many times you listen to a song in a day, which for people like me who hyper-fixate on songs, can be eye-opening. I once listened to “Pink Matter” by Frank Ocean 10 times in one day, and yes, I was called out on it. In addition, a cool feature of the app is it will show if you and your friends listen to the same song, giving you both a notification that you were listening to the same song at specific times! Personally, this is one of my favorite features, as I love to see my friends and me bonding over the same music.

Another feature in the app is called a “Weekly Recap,” which is given every Sunday. This recap is quite similar to Spotify Wrapped, but you get it every week rather than just once a year. It shows you your top three artists, top songs, and how many minutes you listened in total throughout the week. I love looking into my stats and having the ability to share them with my friends to all compare what we listened to and how much we listened. In addition, you can make the app a Widget on your phone, where you can see exactly what your friends are listening to and have the ability to listen to join in and listen to it at the same time.

“Airbuds” has been a great new addition to my home screen, and I find myself regularly tapping on it as I do with Snapchat or Instagram. I recommend it for any friend group that loves music, especially if you and your friends have different music tastes and are interested in learning more about one another and the songs they listen to on a daily basis. So, go to your phone, go to the App Store, download Airbuds, and discover more about your friends just by the music they listen to!
