Pinterest as an Art Form: How I Use Pinterest to Maximize My Creativity

Pinterest: you either love it or hate it. The nature of Pinterest allows for funny memes, pictures of cute animals, aesthetic imagery, and much more to coexist within a single swipe. The versatility of the platform allows for so much personal creativity and inspiration, and I think everyone should use it to their best ability!
Pinterest has been a holy grail for finding ways to improve my creativity in many aspects of my life. Here are some of the ways that I use Pinterest, and hopefully, some of these ideas can help you on your journey!

Outfit Inspiration

I’m definitely not the first or the last to say this, but Pinterest is an amazing tool for finding outfit inspiration and style guidance! I suggest starting with a simple search for ‘outfits’ if you’re looking to explore style. Save what resonates with you and look further into it! I urge you to look into different aesthetics too; you might find out that you’re into a style you’ve never heard of before! Additionally, you can search or save pins by season, so it’s easier for you to find suitable attire for whatever the weather!

I have a board devoted to outfit inspiration. I divided the board into even more sections, organizing the photos into sections for bags, bracelets, sunglasses, shoes, tops, bottoms, and dresses, along with other categories. I find this sort of organization to be helpful, especially when I’m at the mall or the thrift looking to buy something specific!

Room/Dorm Decoration

Decorating your dorm in a fun and true-to-you style is so important. After all, this is your living space! Try searching for “dorm room ideas” to get started, and specify your search based on your taste! Take inspiration from what you like and leave the rest. I find that searching by color scheme helped me (for example, looking up “light blue dorm room” to find light blue decorations and overall layout ideas). Pennants, banners, and bulletin boards are some cute DIY projects that can make a dorm room feel more personal and cozy.

One of the first things when I started looking for dorm decor was consult Pinterest. I found a lot of my inspiration through the platform, and ended up with a cute pink room that is a dream to wake up in every morning!

Reference and Inspiration for Art

As an artist, I use Pinterest to find photo references for my drawings and paintings. I also save art that I enjoy.

If we’re being real, any photo on Pinterest can be used as a reference; the possibilities are endless! Specific poses are easy to come by, as well as comprehensive art tutorials if you look them up.

Pinterest is full of other art-related content, too. Reference imagery is just the tip of the iceberg; you can explore DIY projects (like I mentioned in the Dorm Decor section), or just look through other artists’ work to get your creative juices flowing!

Mood Boards/Making a Virtual Scrapbook

Sometimes, Pinterest is the art itself, not just the inspiration for it. I love curating boards with the intent of just vibes. I have boards for colors, seasons, holidays, and aesthetics. These can help me outline my life, or just put me in a positive, more creative mood! I find ‘random’ boards like this help me with organizing my thoughts.

You can make mood or vision boards to help outline how you want the future to look for yourself and to set personal goals. I know I referenced back to my “2025 manifest” board throughout the year to see how my aspirations lined up with reality, and I think it was a genuinely useful tool for keeping me on track!

More Board Ideas

Here are some additional board ideas for you to create that can help you with creativity, inspiration in daily life, or just for fun: poetry, healthy recipes, Spotify covers, positive affirmations, nail and hair inspiration, bucket list ideas, holiday wishlists, tattoo inspiration, and makeup inspiration.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list, just some boards I have that I have been able to apply to my life.
