Outer Banks’ Characters & Where They Would Live on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

In light of the release of OBX Season 3, I have taken some time to think about each character’s development throughout the series. I thought it would be fun to see how OBX characters would fit into the UMass community. Here are the UMass living areas that I believe would fit each character:

John B Routledge

John B’s personality is very adventurous, and he is also a risk-taker. His “you-only-live-once” type of personality would make him an ideal candidate as a Southwest resident. Specifically, John B would live in one of the towers, but would often visit his friends in different residential areas. You would find John B hanging with his friends at late night at Berk too. When he’s not in Southwest, John B likes to hang out by the campus pond when it’s warm and lay on the hammocks, or even have campfires with the pogues.

Sarah Cameron

Sarah Cameron, a born “kook” and current pogue, can be seen walking through the Commonwealth Honors College. Sarah Cameron would live with a roommate of the same socioeconomic status as herself. She also chose CHC so that she can be close to John B in Southwest, but also appease her father, Ward, with her choice of rigorous studies. Sarah likes to hang out in Southwest more often than in honors because she tries to avoid Topper seeing her spotted with John B. If Topper sees Sarah and John B together, he will call Rafe about it and have John B expelled (because we all know what Rafe is capable of).

Kiara Carrera

When Sarah found out that Kiara also committed to UMass, Kiara’s parents made sure that she would not only live in CHC but also in a room with Sarah Cameron. Kiara’s parents want Kiara to have a roommate who shares the same socioeconomic status as herself. And who better than a hometown friend from the wealthier side of the island? Kiara has her parents fooled because she often hangs out in Central and Orchard Hill with the stoner friends she made from her Intro to Philosophy course. Kiara despises the preppy “know-it-all” crowd on her floor in Oak.

Jj Maybank

JJ is probably my favorite one so far because he is my favorite character on the show. JJ forgot to request a housing appointment, so the summer before his freshman year, the only spot that was left was a forced triple in Southwest. He is mad that he has to live with two other guys, who in his mind, are “kooks.” JJ ends up swapping with John B’s roommate mid-semester so that he and John B can live together. JJ skips his classes sometimes but asks Pope to give him the notes since they both happen to share two classes together. On the weekends, JJ tries to avoid getting into altercations with the UMPD and the Amherst police. Surprisingly, he’s done a pretty good job.

pope Heyward

Pope knew he was destined to live in the Honors College; especially when he found out that UMass offered him a scholarship he couldn’t turn down. Although Pope likes living in CHC, he often finds himself hanging out with his friend Cleo in Orchard Hill. He likes the people there better than in the honors college. And when he’s not hanging out with Cleo, he reunites with the rest of the pogues for late night at Worcester or Berk. Pope’s adventurous side is brought out when he hangs out with the rest of the pogues. He also got a job on-campus at the Procrastination Station to make some money as a college student.
