Starting over at a new college can be difficult for any Collegiette. With over 28,000 students studying at UMass Amherst, it can be hard to fit in at such a large university at first. Here are some ways UMass transfers can meet people, have fun, and feel at home at their new school.

1. Leave Sylvan!

UMass has designated housing for transfers in Sylvan. This means that most of the transfer students are all put together, somewhat out of the way of the center of campus. While this makes it easier to meet and relate to other transfer students, you can miss out on the rest of the campus. Leave Sylvan, or whatever other dorm you might be in, and reach out to students from other parts of campus.

2. Keep your door open

When you have to be in your dorm, keep your door open! This invites others to spark conversations, or to simply say, “Hello.” It’s the simplest way to make friends from the comfort of your room!

3. Join a Club

You’ve probably heard this many times, but that’s because it’s true! Joining an organization can help to meet people who share your interests. If you like the outdoors, join the Outing Club! Is skiing your calling? The Ski & Board club or Alpine Skiing is your answer. There are over 300 clubs for just about every major or interest — whether you’re an anime lover, dance enthusiast, or anything in between.

4. Play an Intramural Sport

Intramural sports are great for active Collegiettes who want to skip all of the meetings that usually come with joining an organization. UMass Amherst offers flag-football, frisbee, basketball, soccer, and many other sports on the intramural level. Signing up is as simple as visiting the UMass Recreation Center website.

5. Go out in Amherst Center

Amherst Center has so many great stores, restaurants, and parks. Weekends bring visitors from all over New England into the quaint town center. Exploring North and South Pleasant Street can lead to making new friends, especially at night. Bars often offer events throughout the week, such as karaoke at Stacker’s on Tuesday nights.

6. Do your homework in a new place

Coffee lovers rejoice! There are so many great coffee shops and cafes in the Amherst area that are great places to get some studying done. While you’re sipping that Skim Pumpkin Spice latte shamelessly, spark a conversation with the friendlystudent near you could lead to a new friend.

7. Start a study group

The classroom can be a fantastic place to meet people, considering that all of your classmates have to study for the same exams as you do. Starting a study group makes studying almost fun and a social event. Plus, you’ll be prepared once that first test comes.

Meeting people isn’t difficult if you reach out to others and try new things. Being a transfer can be tough, but there’s no need to worry with new friends by your side!
