5 Quotes I’m Slowly, But Surely Learning to Live By

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

As a senior in college, this time of life is a whirlwind of emotions. I’m a sucker for Pinterest, and it helps me find the words that I don’t know how to say and helps me take a minute to slow down and feel what I need to feel. Here are a few of my favorites that I’ve pinned in the first few months of senior year, and what they mean to me!

“Don’t lose this moment searching for another.”

This is a year of lasts. Last first day of school. Last fall semester. Last time you’ll live on the same street as all of your college friends. Last tailgate. Last Halloweekend. I’m doing everything in my power to not let these little moments slip away. Many of my friends and peers are applying to graduate school and applying for jobs, but for me, I will stay at this moment. I like to take things day by day, so at the moment I can stay.

“You deserve the empathy you give others.”

Being at this age is a blessing and a curse at the same time. While I talk all the time about how much fun I have with my friends and how I have a great group of friends who will last a lifetime, as many college students feel, people can also be selfish at this age. Although I believe this is the time of life to be selfish, that doesn’t mean people should be disregarding others’ feelings. I’ve noticed this with many people, them giving, giving, giving, and never receiving anything back. It can seem like life isn’t fair often, but this quote has helped me realize that even though I don’t always feel empathy, I do deserve it. You deserve what you put into the world!

“If it comes, let it. If it goes, let it.”

You are rare if you know exactly what you are doing and who you are right now. If you don’t, that’s okay, too. People often come and go in this phase of life too. Especially in the relationship context. If that person you thought had feelings for your leaves, let them. If they want to stay, let them. There is no point in forcing anything to happen right now. We are in a constant state of flux at this age, so let whatever happens, happen.

“It’s only embarrassing if you’re embarrassed.”

This one is like a play on “nothing matters.” If you do everything in life with full confidence, how can that be embarrassing? Being confident is the least embarrassing thing you can do. It’s also very possible to act confident without actually feeling confident. If it won’t matter in a year, why let it bother you now?

“No one is you and that is your power.”

Learning to love yourself is the hardest thing to do. I am consistently reminding myself I will never be this young again, so why not enjoy it? Being 100% your full authentic self is the best thing you can do at this age. So many women and girls spend their whole lives wishing they looked another way, had a different life, lived somewhere else, wishing they were a different size of jeans. It’s a lot better on the mind and body to realize that being you is the best thing you can be, because of the fact no one can be you. It’s a waste to spend your life wishing you were different, it’s truly your power that no one else can be you.

I would love to say that these quotes are truly something I live by every day, but that’s still a work in progress. Like I said before, I take things day by day, so day by day I try to engrave these quotes into my being. This year has been all about growth as a person and learning to love me, so I hope others abiding by this type of mindset can find comfort in these quotes, as well.
