The pop genre dominates radio stations; a few songs that are hard to distinguish from each other play over and over again for months at a time. If you’ve been meaning to branch out and expand your musical interests, the alternative scene is the place to look. Here are some artists that can get you started.

1. The Kooks Formed in 2004, this British band’s blend of chill, energetic songs fit just about any mood. As a bonus, each vocalist’s English accent is accentuated in their songs, making them all the more charming.

Song recommendations: “She Moves In Her Own Way,” “Naive,” “Petulia”

2. Alabama Shakes

Need an uplifting listen? Check out The Alabama Shakes, a blues-rock group that has been rising to the top of the alternative music scene since 2009.

Song recommendations: “Hold On,” “Don’t Wanna Fight,” “Gimme All Your Love”

3. Kings of Leon

This Nashville-based band defines high-energy, original music. Their foot-tapping tunes are perfect to listen to on the way to an exam or for when you need a mood boost.

Song recommendations: “Sex on Fire,” “Manhattan,” “Supersoaker”

4. Hozier

You probably know him from his hit single “Take Me to Church,” but once you explore more of this Irish musician’s work, we guarantee you will fall in love with his songs. Take caution though: once you start listening to Hozier, it will be hard to stop.

Song recommendations: “Work Song,” “Someone New,” “Jackie and Wilson”

5. Mac Demarco

Are you into music with a beachy vibe? If so, Mac Demarco is the guy for you. He provides that laid-back feel every Collegiette could use during busy weeks.

Song recommendations: “Dreaming,” “Still Together,” “Treat Her Better”

6. The 1975

The 1975 sounds different from almost any other artist you’ve heard. Although most of their music tends to be energetic, they’re not afraid to slow it down and get sentimental. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the best mood or the worst, you’re bound to find a song that suits you.

Song recommendations: “Settle Down,” “Robbers,” “The City”

7. Young the Giant

Young the Giant, while relaxed in some songs, has the type of energy that will keep you motivated throughout the day. Although you’ve most likely heard their hits, your playlist will be stocked with their lesser-known songs soon enough.

Song recommendations: “Strings,” “Apartment,” “Daydreamer”

8. The Killers

The Killers, renowned for their 2004 hits “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me,” have countless lesser-known beats just as worthy of a listen. Their variety of sounds is inspiring, and will absolutely keep you hooked. Not to mention their name is appropriate; after listening to The Killers you’ll feel motivated and ready to take on whatever life throws at you. Killin’ it.

Song recommendations: “The Way It Was,” “Shot At The Night,” “Runaways”

9. The Strokes

Dealing with a break up and need to get some anger out? With The Strokes, you’ll find songs full of heavy tones and a strong drum presence that are perfect for when you need to just let it out. Later on, try out their slower beats for a smoother sound.

Song recommendations: “Reptilia,” “Machu Picchu,” “Someday”

10. WALK THE MOON

You probably know them from their recent hit single “Shut Up and Dance,” but this Ohio-bred band has a whole lot more where that came from. Their upbeat, electronic feel will be sure to boost any Collegiette’s mood. WALK THE MOON is definitely the glass-half-full type, so if you’re looking for a burst of positivity, these guys are for you.

Song recommendations: “Shiver Shiver,” “Quesadilla,” “Work This Body”
