Online Classes: Are They Worth It?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Online classes. Some people love them. Some people hate them. If you have never taken one, what are you supposed to think about them? Every online class is set up differently, but what are the benefits and drawbacks of online classes in general terms?

Pros

Flexibility

You can work on most online classes whenever works for you and your schedule. No need to worry about meeting and focusing on class the same hour or two a few days a week. While there are still weekly due dates in most cases, you can work on your class any hour of the day.

Note: Some online classes require you to meet as a class online during certain times every week. Make sure you know exactly what you are signing up for before you register!

Work wherever you want

Whether you prefer working from the comfort of your bed or the table in the corner of your local coffee shop, online classes offer you the flexibility to control the environment that is best for you. As long as you have access to a computer and a WiFi connection, you are set.

Discussions

Sometimes it can be daunting participating in in-person discussions. Some people prefer to take their time to calculate their responses, while in class you would be required to think on your feet due to the fast-paced nature. Online discussion forums in online classes give those that are more introverted an opportunity to be heard.

Cons

Procrastination

When no one is expecting you in a classroom and you don’t have to go to a lecture to get crucial information you can’t get anywhere else, it’s easy to put off school work. Waiting to complete and turn in assignments until the minute before it’s due becomes easier once the class runs on your own time.

Relationships

While online classes provide discussion forums, it is difficult to form relationships with your peers and instructors. Conversations in the discussion forums often feel more like a calculated written assignment than a true conversation and without the opportunity to go to office hours or communicate back and forth effectively besides through email, its difficult for you and the instructor to get to know each other well.

Distractions

When a class is taught in-person, the material doesn’t just stop every time you get distracted. With online classes, it is easy to just pick up where you left off with class material. As a result, it is easy to become distracted by phones or television. Keep in mind that checking your phone every few minutes or taking a break to watch an episode of your current favorite show only drags out your time doing school work way longer than it needs to be.

Online classes can be great but without enough self-discipline, they can be trouble than they are worth. Take into consideration what your personal needs, wants, and habits are and make the decision that will be best for you.
