8 Places to Travel This Summer Right in Iowa

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Traveling is one of the coolest ways of experiencing life. It’s something that opens your eyes to new ideas and can inspire anyone. Everyone takes something different out of seeing new places, which is what is so amazing about it. The only bad thing that comes with traveling is the expense. We all know we can’t afford plane tickets, hotels and going new places ALL the time. But, what if we could find amazing places in the place we already know…

YES, traveling in your own state is a thing, and people are doing it. Finding new places in a place you already know so well can be eye-opening. It will give you a new perspective, and it can be a new photo op, let’s be real here. Let’s save the money (and time) this summer by finding 10 new places you can travel to in your own state that you never knew existed.

1. Maquoketa Caves State Park

This state park located in Jackson County, Iowa, is filled with more caves than any state park in Iowa. It’s a perfect place to go hiking for the day and explore. There are hikes that vary from easy to more challenging, so there’s something for everyone!

2. Crystal Lake Cave

This beauty is located in Dubuque, Iowa, and has some of the prettiest caves you will ever see. This area is the home to beautiful mineral formations that are still forming to this day. There are many opportunities for tours and many other activities here!

3. Columbus Junction Swinging Bridge

This incredible bridge was first constructed in 1886 but has been rebuilt since, and frequent improvements are being made. This bridge is located in Columbus Junction, Iowa, and is great for photos and being a child again!

4. Pella

Hasn’t everyone heard of this little town by now? If you haven’t, it’s a must see, especially during tulip time. You can go be Dutch for a day and explore this quaint little town in Pella, Iowa. Did I mention the bakery there has the best Dutch letters ever? Put it on your list!

5. Lake Red Rock

While you’re in Pella, stop by Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake! There are heaps of activities here including fishing, paddle boarding and climbing to the top of the Cordova tower!

6. Union Grove State Park

This is another state park you’ll want to hit on your summer vacation. With infinite amounts of things to do including a beach, bicycling and Wildflower viewing! You will never be bored with a trip to Gladbrook, Iowa, this summer.

7. Amana Colonies

You can check this one off your list on a stop just outside of Iowa City. This beautiful little gem is located just off of I-80 and offers the seven villages of the Amana Colonies. There is a unique history and culture here that you can only experience for yourself once you make the trip!

8. Downtown Des Moines

Growing up in West Des Moines, I have made my way to downtown Des Moines many, many times. There is so much to offer here that you might want to take the weekend off to fit it all in. The one restaurant you HAVE to try is Zombie Burger. I promise you won’t regret it!
