Ways to Workout at UConn Without Going to the Gym

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Sometimes the task of exercising and dragging yourself to the gym seems like more work than it’s worth.  But if waking up early to go to the gym isn’t your thing, as a UConn student, you have some alternative options.

1. Take advantage of the many stairmasters throughout campus (a.k.a hills).  Stop taking the bus and show Busby and Hilltop what you’re made of!

2. On cold, rainy and/or windy days, instead of taking shortcuts through buildings, just run really fast to your destination!  With the amount of windy rainy days we have in Storrs, you should be able to burn a good amount of calories each week.

3. If you have a car on campus, park behind McMahon everyday (another hill to take advantage of).

4. Go open the doors at Oak Hall to work on your biceps and triceps.

5. Consider switching your major to English!  This will practically guarantee that you will be carrying around at least 20 books in your backpack at any given time along with your laptop.  Who needs good posture when you could have toned back muscles?

6. Opt to live on the top floor of one of the dorms without elevators.  Yes, moving in and out will be torture but you will have a built in way to sweat off weight and tone your leg muscles everyday!

7. Stop using the bus tracker.  This will increase your chances of getting a sprint in as you try to catch the bus.

8. Or just stop taking the bus entirely and walk from one end of our massive campus to the other.

9. Attempt to shave in one of the dorm showers.  This will inevitably lead to a variety of complex yoga poses and stretches to improve your flexibility and balance.  Bonus points if you are doing this in one of the showers with a curtain rather than a door.

10. Serious/best suggestion: Go watch the sunset on Horsebarn Hill.  The beautiful view is an amazing reward for the work that it takes to get up there.

Hopefully this article either inspired you to switch up your workout routine for next semester or made the gym seem not so bad after all!
