Are you a new freshman who is struggling to meet and socialize with people in college? We’ve all been there. Read on for our tips on how to find your tribe, and why it’s important to be yourself.
Be Confident
Don’t be afraid to go up to new people. Everyone here, especially freshman, are looking to make new friends. Go up to someone in class and introduce yourself. The person you almost didn’t talk to could end up being your closest friend at the end of the semester.
Be Open
Be prepared to engage with all types of people no matter their looks, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. The people who are different from you will help you to gain new perspectives on life.
Don’t Stress
If the people you introduce yourselves to end up seeming cold or uninterested, don’t take it personally! College is tough, and everyone has their own thing going on at home and in their heads and that has nothing to do with you.
Seek Similarity
Surround yourself with people who have similar, but not identical goals as you. For example, if you want to earn that 4.0 first semester, find friends who also prioritize school. If you surround yourself with people who party every night and sleep till 12, you may see yourself repeating the same behavior and your grades might suffer because of it.
Start Fresh
Who you were in high school does not define who you will be in college. If you were quieter in high school and want to become more of a social butterfly, you have the opportunity to change! College can be the perfect time to come out of your shell.
Try New Things
What have you always wanted to do, but were too afraid of? Put yourself out there! Try hiking trips, joining new clubs, doing theater, or taking a gym class you were always nervous would be way too hard for you.
Put Your Energy Out There
Do not put too much pressure to lock in and find your best friends right away. Just be friendly and open to hanging out with different types of people and your true friends will come in time.
