6 Things You Need On Your New Year’s Resolution List This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

As the new year is fast approaching, it’s about that time when we all start thinking about all of the New Year’s resolutions that we didn’t accomplish this year. Whether it was going to the gym every day or sticking to a strict diet, we often give ourselves unreasonable goals that end up not working out in our favor. But not this year! 2023 is almost here, and it’s time to start thinking about what we want to accomplish. Don’t stress yourself out—here are some reasonable and easy New Year’s resolutions that are sure to make you feel happy about doing something new!

1) Give someone a compliment everyday

This is something really easy that you can incorporate into your everyday life without having to change anything that you do on a day-to-day basis. By giving someone a compliment, you are not only making that person feel good, but you are also making yourself feel good! A compliment can range from saying you like a person’s shirt to telling them how good of a friend they are. You can even switch it up and give a compliment to a stranger.

2) Volunteer once a month

Most of us don’t get around to volunteering very often. However, if you give yourself a timestamp of how often you want to volunteer, you may be more likely to actually do it. If once a month seems like a lot, you can also do it once every two or three months.

3) Save some money

Saving money can be a challenging task for many people. If this is something you struggle with, you should consider saving on a smaller scale. What I mean by this is starting a coin jar at the beginning of the year and seeing how many coins you can accumulate. You might be surprised at just how much you can save!

4) Spend less time on social media

Social media often creates unrealistic expectations of what we should or shouldn’t be doing. Basing yourself off of others can be harmful and contributes to negative mental health effects. Start off by deleting TikTok or Instagram for a portion of the day or seeing how long you can go without it.

5) Buy a journal

Logging your day in a journal can allow you to reflect on what you may want to work on, and writing down your goals may make you more likely to complete them. You can even start by writing down one thing you are grateful for every day or something new that you want to try. Whatever you may decide to write can give you something to look forward to during the day.

6) take the stairs

Everyone knows that gym memberships are bought in large quantities consistently around the beginning of the new year. Instead of fully leaping into the idea that you are going to be working out every day, start by doing little things that you may not usually do that promote more movement, such as taking the stairs. This has the potential to benefit you both physically and mentally.

Take the new year by surprise and make more reasonable goals. We all have busy lives and commitments that keep us from doing things that we may like to do. Know that if you don’t accomplish your goals this year, it’s not the end of the world. Start small when creating your New Year’s resolution list this year, but don’t underestimate how much you can accomplish.
