With finals here, it’s easy to freak out and get worked up about upcoming tests and important projects. Unfortunately, all of this stress can wreak havoc on a Colegiette’s mental health and general state of well-being. That’s why it is important to not get too overwhelmed during the weeks leading up to winter break, when you will be able to return home to see loved ones, and get plenty of rest. Taking breaks to de-stress is crucial to well-being during finals; feeling healthy and relaxed can contribute to mental concentration and fact retention almost as much as endless studying. Here are a few good ways to de-stress over the next few weeks, so that you are able to make it through the end of the semester, and get home to the warm bed and loving family that awaits you.
1. Get some exercise!
Exercise has been proven to be one of the best ways to de-stress. Whether it’s a long run around campus or just a few minutes of stretching to get your body moving and elevate your heart beat, exigencies has many health benefits. Whether you’re an exercise junkie, or you’ve literally never been inside the new gym, the next few weeks might be the perfect time to start visiting regularly. Thirty minutes on the elliptical machine or swimming a few laps can be great ways to clear your overcrowd mind. If you don’t think you can motivate yourself enough to solo forms of exercise, try a Zumba class, or relax with one of the many forms of yoga offered by TSR.I f you really don’t think you have time to fit in a gym visit, try bypassing the Joey and instead walking to Davis Square the next time you visit. Trudging through the snow or rain can be workout on it’s own.
2. Movie night
Whether you venture to Davis’s Somerville Theatre to see the new James Bond movie, or just curl up in your bed with Netflix, taking the time to really enjoy a good movie can be super calming. Even better, get a few of your friends together, get snacks, and watch Bridesmaids, Mean Girls, or any other hilarious comedy that seemingly never gets old. Laughing is proven to ease stress, and hanging out with your friends is sure to provide lots of well-needed fun, as well. Just make sure not to plan movie night for the evening before your most important final!
3. Get your nails done
As many of we Collegiettes are well aware, there is nothing as relaxing as a good mani/pedi. Luckily, there are a number of nail salons not too far off-campus (we suggest Davis Square Nails & Spa). So if you’re willing to spend some money, let the professionals take over while you leisurely get your fix of the latest trashy magazines. However, if you’re feeling thriftier, taking a little time to do a really good job yourself can be just as relaxing and rewarding. For those who are challenged when it comes to nails, find a friend with a steady hand and an hour to kill. Doing your nails with a friend is the perfect time to catch up on girl-time, venting about finals, while getting all of the latest gossip.
4. Online Shopping
Although this one may be a little harder for the many Collegiettes on a tight college budget, it can be cathartic even to just look at all your favorite store’s new items. Plus, it will give you a good idea of what to put on your wish list for the holidays! Chill out in your dorm room, make some tea, and knock yourself out over all the new winter fashions without even having to leave the comfort of your dorm. Plus, online shopping means not having to deal with crazy holiday shoppers. You should be on your computer studying, anyway, so what’s one more tab to distract you in the meantime?
We hope these tips are helpful, and that finals season isn’t overbearingly stressful. Remember to enjoy the next few weeks, as it is the last time you will see many of your friends for a while. Most of these activities can be done with a friend, so use them to spend some quality time with the people you love. After all, just hanging out and relaxing with friends for a few minutes is one of the best ways there is to relax! Good luck on your finals, Collegiettes, and have a great winter break!s
