What To Do Over Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

With Spring Break less than a week away, the question on everyone’s minds is “Where am I going?” Whether you’ve had your trip planned for the last six months or are just starting to scrape together plans, we have the down and dirty on where your classmates are going, and who they’re going with!

In a completely un-scientific survey, I asked our fellow Longhorns about their spring break plans, and the answers proved incredibly diverse. Believe it or not, most of the people I polled are heading home for a relaxing week of Mom’s cooking and snuggling with their puppies.

The next largest group plans on staying in good ol’ ATX for the famed South by Southwest festival, which is really three festivals in one! It combines a world-renowned film festival, to which many celebrities including Shailene Woodley and Zac Efron travel; a music festival bursting with huge stars like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kendrick Lamar; and an interactive festival which features the latest in gaming, gadgets and social media. Aside from visiting SXSW, there are so many other fantastic things to do in Austin during your week off, and if you get the chance, explore the city while it’s full of interesting people here for the festival!

If you are looking for a true college Spring Break experience, never fear, because many of your peers are too! Locales like Destin and Panama City Beach in Florida; Gulf Shores, Alabama, and South Padre Island offer that MTV Spring Break experience that we all grew up thinking we would have, and are all not too far away! So if you’re looking for some fun in the sun—and only a few memories—grab some friends, a couple of tanks, and some sunscreen and head southeast!

The rest of the destinations for this year’s Spring Breakers are very diverse. Several of the people I polled responded that they were heading to other states, including Illinois, Colorado, California, New York, Louisiana, and Washington D.C. Some are heading to tropical islands such as Hawaii and Jamaica, while others are planning to travel abroad to Europe and Asia!

As for who all these vacationers are traveling with, well, that’s as diverse as where they’re going! Most of the respondents are planning on hitting the road with their friends, while others are going on family vacations or with their significant others. Others are traveling with large groups (like their sororities and fraternities), and Young Life is traveling as a group to Florida! Some are even braving the open road all alone, which can be fun as long as you take the necessary precautions!

So whether you’re planning on turning to the color of toast at the beach or trying to catch Ryan Gosling’s attention on the red carpet here in Austin, you can be safe in knowing you’ll have plenty of Longhorns to keep you company! Stay safe and have a wonderful Spring Break!
