I spent the summer at my older sister’s house, and anytime she had the TV on there was a 99% chance that she was watching a true crime show. I ended up getting sucked into a lot of episodes she was watching, and I ended up binge-watching a few on my own thanks to her.
Homicide Hunter Lt Joe Kenda — Investigation Discovery
I LOVE this series. It’s not too corny like other true crime series that make you laugh more than they make you invested in the story. Lt. Joe Kenda has worked in homicide for many years, and in this series he goes through some of the most disturbing cases he ever solved.
Serial
This podcast is incredible. I first learned about it last fall in one of my first journalism classes, but only checked it out this summer. I binged through all three seasons in a matter of weeks, because once I started listening, I couldn’t stop. This podcast is an investigative journalism series that dives into true stories — covering one story each season.
Inside the Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes — FOX
You can find this short series on Hulu as of the publication date of this article.
This series was really interesting. The tapes from the farm that Manson’s cult resided on were difficult to watch and sent a chill down my spine. It was eye-opening to see how just brainwashed members of his cult were, and how dedicated they were to Manson.
Evil Lives Here — Investigation Discovery
This is a series that my sister was watching often this summer. I always managed to get sucked into watching when I’d happen to walk by while it was on. In this series, family members share stories of their loved ones who became killers. This show really shows the truth of having 20/20 hindsight after a horrific incident.
Crime Junkie
This podcast is perfect for those of you who love true crime. This series posts a new story every week, and has additional content on their website if you just can’t get enough. I binged some of this over the summer, and it was so easy to get sucked into. Every episode left me wanting more.
