The Show Must Go On
Her Campus Texas: What extracurriculars are you involved in?
Sean Tecson: I’m the Special Events Chair in Hook ‘em Arts, the student organization of Texas Performing Arts. I also work in the Student Engagement department at TPA. I’m the Executive Director of Round About Players, a student organization where we produce our own theater. I’m also an active member of the national theater honor society Alpha Psi Omega. On top of that, I’m also currently direction a show, title Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.
HCTX: How did you get involved in theater?
ST: I focused on speech and debate until sophomore year, when a friend called me on a Saturday morning. She asked me to fill in for another student who had dropped out of the play and I groggily agreed while half asleep. I had no idea that the rehearsal time commitment was so intense and how much work you had to put into a play. But I fell in love with it so I stuck with it!
HCTX: Which do you like more — the administrative or creative side of the arts?
ST: If I had to choose, I would say creative, because that is the side I am most passionate about, and it makes me the happiest. I get really excited putting up work and seeing how people respond to it and how it affects them. I like to see the audience interact with the work I’ve put my blood, sweat, and tears into.
HCTX: That makes sense. It seems that you really like to dedicate yourself to the productions you work on. Out of all the shows you have worked on while at UT, what have been the best three experiences?
ST: The Stonewater Rapture, it was the first show I directed and produced independently. And Then Came Tango, it was a great experience to learn about the conflicts and obstacles that happen when putting up a show. The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged, it was the first show I worked one where I was the only guy. We also swapped out the genders of the cast, letting us work with an all-female cast. It gave a lot of perspective about gender roles in society.
HCTX: What is the one show you would love to work on?
ST: Avenue Q – acting or directing, I would just love to be involved with it!
