Romantic Comedies To Raise Your Standards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

Romantic comedies have been my latest obsession. I’ve always loved them. I’ll admit I’m a hopeless romantic so watching these movies only raises my unrealistic expectations. Here are some of my favorite rom-coms for a cozy night in and (if you’re over 21!) a glass of wine of course.

1. Clueless

Clueless is a classic and one of my favorite movies in general. It’s a coming-of-age teen movie that follows a high school girl named Cher. This movie is great to watch for a girls’ night. It’s full of iconic quotes, laughs and watching Cher’s growth is the best part for me.

2. Bridget Jones’ Diary

I wish I had seen this movie sooner. The story follows a 32-year-old single woman named Bridget who wants to get her life together and take control. While on this journey she documents everything in her diary. This movie is hilarious and features a love triangle, which I personally always love. Also, Hugh Grant is in this movie and I love watching films he’s been in.

3. 13 Going on 30

Another classic is 13 Going on 30. The movie is about a 13-year-old girl named Jenna who is tired of middle school and wants to be an adult, 30 and flirty to be exact. After making a wish on her birthday, she finds out her “picture perfect” life isn’t what she expected it to be. This movie is one of my favorites and it’s unhealthy how many times I’ve rewatched it.

4. My Best Friend’s Wedding

This movie focuses on two childhood friends, Julianne and Michael, who made a promise to marry each other if they were single by age 28. Once Michael makes an announcement about his engagement, Julianne finally realizes the feelings she’s had for Michael all along. This movie is definitely worth watching, especially if you’ve never seen it. I love Julia Roberts in this and I highly recommend it!

5. 27 Dresses

Always the bridesmaid, but never the bride. This movie tells the story of Jane who always puts others above her and ends up a bridesmaid for all her friends’ weddings. However, things take a turn when her sister becomes engaged to the man she secretly loves. I’m about to rewatch this movie for another time. It’s interesting, fun and I love the concept of this plot.
