Name:
Rikki Garner

Year:
Junior

Major:Physics and Psychology

What was your dream as a freshman?
To have a 4.0 GPA and to be a physicist.

What motivates you to stay on your path?
My belief in some “truth,” which is greater than myself.

What advice would you give to freshman?
Confidence is key! Walk into your classes KNOWING you can do well. If you honestly believe that, with enough time and effort, you can know anything, your classes all of a sudden become trivially easy.

What other activities do you do for fun?
Running and dancing! You don’t have to be a Theater & Dance major to have access to dance rooms. Even Gregory has rooms which are pretty empty on the weekends!

How do you balance all that you do?
Schedules! If something doesn’t get onto the schedule, it doesn’t happen. Plan everything you have to do beforehand, including WHEN you’re going to do it.

What is an organization that you are very passionate about?
Women in the Natural Sciences (WINS). This organization does an incredible amount in giving our girls some kind of identity during their freshman year. It’s amazing how important having something to belong to is for someone trying to define themselves. Between getting involved in research through FRI and forming lasting bonds on our WINS trips, there is so much to gain! Not to mention being able to make friends with ACTUAL women (difficult to do when you’re a physics major!).

What’s your favorite part about being a Longhorn?
Knowing how many incredible, industrial, successful people have preceded me at UT. It gives me motivation to follow in their footsteps and do something undeniably useful for society.

Bernice Chuang is a fourth year double majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Communication Studies-Human Relations and doing the Business Foundations Program (aka business minor) at the University of Texas at Austin. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Bernice is a fan of good country music and yummy barbeque! At UT, Bernice is a resident assistant at an all-female residence hall and currently serves as a senator representing her residence hall, Kinsolving, on the Resident Assistant Association. She also leads a small group bible study for Asian American Campus Ministries and sings with her campus ministries’ a cappella group. When she’s not juggling her various roles and commitments, Bernice enjoys exploring downtown Austin, shopping with her fellow RA staff members, reading books on faith and spirituality, learning how to cook and tackling various dessert recipes, and spending quality time with friends.
