Ready to Become an Influencer? Here’s How To Start

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

I started my micro-influencer journey almost three years ago, and now I help others do the same! If you are interested in starting your own journey, then you’ve come to the right place! Here are the five steps you need to take in order to get started!

Step 1: Pre-Launch

Pick Your Niche + Platform

Your niche is what you will be focusing your content on! I strongly recommend picking no more than three pillars because any more can be confusing to your audience or prove too difficult to execute! As for your platform, where do you want to post your content? Some people think influencers only come from Instagram or TikTok, but you can create content on any platform! Pick the one you are most excited to be on, and if you perform well, consider expanding to another one! I started on Instagram and after building my platform for about a year and a half, I launched my TikTok page!

Create Your Page + Bio

After you’ve decided what/where you will be posting, it’s time to build your bio! Check out this video I made spilling everything you need to have in it! And a pro tip, use Milkshake because it’s free! I have been using it for over a year and don’t plan on switching anytime soon.

Step 2: Launch

Start Creating Content

This is the fun part! You can’t build a platform without posting content, so once you’re set up, it’s time to post! And remember to stay true to yourself and only post what makes your heart happy! The most successful influencers understand that authenticity is key!

Be Consistent

To grow and build your platform, you need to not only create content but do so consistently! This is probably the hardest part of starting your journey, so if you have a super busy schedule like me, try content batching! When starting out, I recommend posting 1-2 videos per day but if that’s too much, every other day should work too!

Final Step: Get compensated

find Sponsors (that pay you)

Just because you’re new doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to get paid! Brands care more about the quality of your content than the number of your followers! Having more followers does help with getting more paid opportunities, but at the end of the day, you’re providing a service so you deserve to get paid. A big issue I ran into when starting my journey is that brands only wanted to work with me on a gifted basis, so if you run into the same issue, check out this template I use to negotiate payment!

and that’s it!

I hope this helps and as always, feel free to check out my social media pages to learn all things micro-influencing! Also, I’m always happy to take video or article requests via my DMs, so let me know what you want to learn about next!
