This year, I have three roommates. Two of them are random, and one is a friend from high school. Knowing that I would be living with two random girls was definitely scary at first. Now, I look at it as one of the best things to happen this year. Here’s a list of things I appreciate that we do in our apartment.

Our doors are always open to each other.

This one has become a joke in our apartment because my door will NOT stay open on its own. Seriously though, we’ve tried our best to make our apartment a home. This means being there for and listening to each other, no matter how weird the situation may be. In such a short amount of time, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve stressed, we’ve celebrated, but most importantly, we’ve been there for each other.

Consideration of the common areas

This one is key in making our space feel like home. We respect each other’s space and make sure to respect the areas that we all use, too. Keeping the living room and the kitchen clean has saved us many petty arguments that most roommates deal with.

Introducing each other to our friends

We’ve become more than roommates. These girls are now my friends, who even know my other friends. It’s such a comforting feeling to know that we can all get along, even outside our apartment. It doesn’t always have to be like this, but it has helped us grow closer.

It’s not always 50/50

As friends, we’ve learned that sometimes we need more help than we can give or vice versa. We try to stay pretty equal and keep up with our share, but we’ve also acknowledged the fact that sometimes one of us may need some help. We’re four girls trying to navigate through college and the start of our 20’s. Looking at this with an open mind and without judgment is so important.

I’m so glad I could find support and inspiration in the girls that I live with. It’s made school and this COVID-19 situation a lot easier to handle.
