Post Election and Prop 1: Longhorns Weigh In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

With all of the talk of secession and, everyone’s opinions from DonaldTrump’s to maybe even your cousin who lives in Colorado- flooding the Twitter

and Facebook worlds, it’s getting a little cloudy when it comes to politics.  In Maine marriage equality was passed and Colorado passed the legalization of recreational marijuana. In Austin, proposition 1 passed. Meaning, UT is finally one step closer to having a medical school established on campus. It’s time to see what Longhorns think about the recent developments in politics.

The Election
Whether the candidate you voted for won or not, the election outcome filled many with emotion. Obama supporters rejoiced his win with live updates on their Twitter feeds and putting posts of ‘winning’ memes on Facebook. While many Romney supporters on Twitter and Facebook expressed their worries about the economy, healthcare and the future.
“I didn’t really care either way who was elected. I know that the president, whoever that might be, has the country’s best interest at heart.”
-Katie Ogg, Junior

“I’m indifferent to the whole politics thing. But, I was pretty excited that Obama was reelected because I believe that he still has great things to come for him. He has more to prove and I believe he will do so.”
-Nneoma Ajiwe, Freshman

“I was extremely relieved. The campaign made me believe Obama had no competition. But the election results had me on edge. I am grateful he won, considering how the state of the economy is. He’s the best man for the job.” -Rachel Hill, Senior

“I was glad Obama was given four more years. But if Romney won, I still would have went about my day normally.” -Chris Beale

UT Medical School
To all the collegiettes pursuing a degree in the medical field, it’s time to get excited! After 129 years, Houston and Galveston won’t be the only locations of the University of Texas Medical Schools. Because of the passing of Proposition 1, UT is preparing to have a medical school built right here on the Forty Acres.
“UT is a great school and having a medical school here will only make it better.”
-Katie Ogg, Junior

“I’m excited about the medical school addition. I’m still considering going to medical school. I love UT and Austin, so having an option to go here may be a great opportunity.” -Anthony Engler, Sophomore

“I think it’s great that our campus will become a medical beacon for hope and change in Austin.” -Rachel Hill, Senior

“It’s about time the city of Austin has their own medical school! I only wish that Prop 1 was passed sooner so I could attend.” -Cassandra Pham, Junior
