I am an avid user of Spotify and have been for years. If you need proof, just look at my username, levotic132, a product of the time when it was created (2014). One of the things I love the most about Spotify is that it’s a social app, and you can follow your friends and see what music they’re listening to. Another added bonus of this social feature is that a singular Spotify listener has all public playlists made by any Spotify subscriber at their fingertips, including a number of extremely specific ones.

Now, you may be thinking, “Why would I even want to listen to someone else’s music? I just want to listen to my own songs.” That may be how you choose to listen, but one of the reasons why I love music is because of its ability to bring us back to a certain moment in time. For example, one of my playlists is a collection of songs I listened to on the way to school in the mornings, and I listen to it whenever I miss home. Another reason to listen to specific playlists is because of the situation they describe. One of my personal favorites that I recently added to my library during midterms season was “fetal position at home depot”. If you aren’t a fan of lying on the floor in hardware stores, there are also playlists for heists, committing crimes, or even ancient Greek romances

Some of these playlists are special to the user, like my collection of driving songs. However, many are widely applicable to moments in people’s lives. I, therefore, compiled a list of some oddly specific playlists that you may enjoy.

  1. The Meg/Jo/Beth/Amy as Taylor Swift songs playlists: Taylor Swift is my favorite artist and Little Women is one of my favorite books, so it only makes sense that I love these playlists. If you’re a fan of the book or the movie, you’ll be sure to love (and probably cry along to) these playlists.
  2. The Final Girl in an 80s Horror Movie: This playlist is perfect for any slasher or Halloween fan, and as a fan of neither I was surprised to really like it. However, I do love eighties music and some of the eerier tunes on the playlist, like Flashbacks (Slowed) by CRASPORE were a very interesting change of pace.
  3. The We Never Even Dated Playlists: There are a ton of these on Spotify, which is a true testament to how many people have been in the situation where you are hurting over someone you were never even dating. After all, how can you miss something you never had? I included links to several, for your listening/crying pleasure: we never dated but it still hurt, pov: we never even dated, we never dated but it still hurt (there’s several playlists with this name).
  4. Exploring a Historical Museum– This playlist should apply to any and all dark academia fans and is the perfect example of an extremely niche playlist. Even if it’s been a while since you’ve been to a museum, these songs really make you feel like you’re there.
  5. UT Austin Playlists- Since this is HerCampus Texas, I felt like it was only right if I added a number of UT specific playlists I managed to find on Spotify

UT Austin Sobering Center– This playlist has a lot of great party songs and I use it constantly when someone hands me the aux and asks for “hype”.

UT Austin Aux– I’m not the biggest country fan, but if you are this playlist offers a nice variety.

UT Austin Turnup– Similar to UT Austin Sobering Center, but a shorter playlist with a more focused concentration.

Happy Listening!
