Going to a large state school can be daunting! Here are my tips for making our 40,000 person undergrad community feel like home.

Find…

A sisterhood

Joining a group of girls that support, uplift, and empower you is essential. Whether this is through Greek life, a spirit group, or an organization like Her Campus Texas

A professional organization

An org that aligns with your major or career can help you further your time in college and start building a network. You can gain leadership experience, further your knowledge of the subject, and gain older upperclassmen mentors for advice.

Work or mentor

Throughout my time in college, I’ve held internships that are great for real-world experience and prepping for adult life. Mentor positions help advise students in situations you’ve overcome. Personally, I am a transfer mentor.

College is a pivotal time for development. I find it important to be active in various areas rather than solely focusing on one activity and growing burnt out. At a big school like UT joining extracurriculars is imperative to growing a community.

Hi, I'm Madeline Muschalik! This is my fourth year in Her Campus; I wrote for Her Campus at Wake Forest University before transferring to UT in fall 2019. Last year I was the Her Campus Texas Co-President and Campus Correspondent & it was so rewarding. I am excited to explore Austin and learn more about our university through Texas Her Campus. Some of my hobbies include running, reading, yoga, and traveling! I am a Public Relations Major and with a minor in Entrepreneurship and certificate in Creative Writing. Outside of Her Campus I am involved in Texas American Marketing Association, Moody Communication Council, a member of the Kendra Scott WEL Institute Student Council, Texas Kappa Delta, and I am a Transfer Year Interest Group (TRIG) mentor. I love UT & all the amazing opportunities (like Her Campus) that it has to offer!
