Recently, with my hectic load of classes, cell-related research, and the pressure of being pre-med, I find myself not taking the time to relax and enjoy myself. I have always admired those who take a portion of their time every day to enjoy something that makes them truly happy, whether it consists of playing a musical instrument, exercising, getting coffee with a friend, or even eating. In order to make time for myself every day, I have lately opted for the following activities:
Read Books: Being a true nerd, one of my ideal ways of relaxing and temporarily disengaging myself from the real world consists of reading. In fact, I remember that while my parents were complaining that my younger sister read more, they would tell me to put my book down so they could see more of me. Entering UT as a freshman in the fall of 2010, I remember not bringing any of my favorite books with me, with the idea that I would never have time to read for enjoyment as well as balancing a social and academic life. Even though this is partially true—I can’t read for 3 hours nonstop for pure enjoyment, I have realized that I can read a book I truly enjoy for an hour to allow myself to relax. After having done this for a week, I realized that I am effortlessly productive and more efficient after I have taken some time to unwind every day.
Listen to Music: As a freshman, I have gone through dramatic lifestyle changes this past semester, and partially forgot how relaxing it was to listen to music that I like for a break during overwhelming days. I’ve found the simple routine of listening to my iPod while walking to class to be a great way to relax and enjoy all the amenities of life.
Taking in Nature: Spring has arrived, and with it comes warming weather, beautiful greenery, and breathtaking flowers! Taking the time to notice the beauty of nature immediately puts me in a better mood, and I find myself excited and motivated to accomplish all my goals. From doing homework outside to being mindful of your surroundings while walking to class, there are many ways and opportunities to appreciate nature.
Doing these simple things on days I feel stressed has managed to not only be relaxing and satisfying, but also to increase my productivity in my work. Taking this time to unwind lets me approach my tasks with a fresh mind and a more positive and eager attitude. Whether it be watching “Glee” every week, Skyping with your old friends, or taking walks, it’s important to take time every day for yourself. Life is exciting and beautiful, and doing little things that makes you happy reinforces this and lets you stay positive and determined under pressure. Â
