Off the Chains: Corey Haines

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

The path of Corey Haines’ life seems like a straight shot toward success. He’s a neuroscience major, has research that has already been published and has his very own LinkedIn profile. His favorite course at UT has been Research Methods and his favorite item of clothing is his Northface jacket. “Dependable and comfortable,” he tells me. I sat next to him at the game on Saturday night and he informed me of what scientists call deindividualism. It’s the notion that, when put together in large groups, people become less self aware. So after the referee called holding for the fifteenth time, and a chant stringed with explicits arose behind us, he gave me a knowing look. “Perhaps if they were alone,” he began “they would not be so bold.” Corey is incredibly self aware, and the best parts of him are not very bold; the best parts are his sly remarks and quips that are hidden beneath a straight forward delivery. Corey’s true charm and wit come out only to those who listen, which a part of me thinks, is just how he likes it.

Major: Neuroscience

Year: Junior

Relationship Status: Single

Celebrity Crush: Between Rachel McAdams and Anne Hathaway, but if forced to choose I’m going to go with the Canadian.

Her Campus Texas: What’s the most embarrassing that’s ever happened to you?

Corey Haines: It was definitely getting hit by a moving car on my bike. It was really cold and I was being pounded with rain, so that was unfortunate.

HCTX: What’s the craziest thing you’ve done since being at UT?

CH: The summer after my freshman year I went hiking on the Athabascan Glacier in Canada. That was a really unique and fun experience.

HCTX: What TV character do you most relate to?

CH: I’d have to go with Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, although I enjoy exploring the outdoors significantly more than him.

HCTX: Do you have any hidden talents?

CH: I’m really good at remembering minute details people mention in conversations. Oddly though I’m horrible at remembering names…go figure.

HCTX: Do you have any pre-test rituals?

CH: I always like to give myself time to stretch and walk to my test. It helps me relax and gets my mind focused.

HCTX: By what motto do you live?

CH: You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.” It’s good to have a plan, but it doesn’t mean much unless you take meaningful steps toward achieving your goals.

HCTX: What’s the first thing you notice about a girl?

CH: It’s cliche, but her eyes.
