I think we all learned at a really young age watching Elle Woods hibernating in her bed throwing chocolates at her TV that breakups are rough. Not talking to them as much (or at all), giving back their stuff, or the dreaded: making it Facebook official. All you want to do is lie around in sweats, eat ice cream, and watch The Notebook, sobbing while cursing your parents for not naming you Rachel McAdams and putting you in acting school so you could passionately kiss Ryan Gosling in the rain. And that is perfectly okay. Normal, even.

While it may not seem like it at the time, it’s easier to work through the hard feelings back to happiness, instead of pretending everything is okay right away. We all remember Rory breaking up with Dean right? She woke up at 6 a.m., made lists, pretending she wasn’t sad, all to end up kissing Chad Michael Murray and then being ready to wallow. I’m sorry, but if I was about to kiss CMM, I wouldn’t want any signs of tears. I’ve put together a few tips to help you with a breakup so you can get back to being your fierce, fabulous self.

Listen to Music
As the Zooey Deschanel as “Jess” from New Girl puts it, “Don’t tell me music can’t make a difference, ‘cause it can!” Somehow T-Swift’s lyrics manage to accurately describe how we feel better than we can, and somehow makes it rhyme at the end of every line. Grab your tissue box and pint of Ben and Jerry’s while you listen to the sad playlist and then wipe away your mascara and listen to the fierce playlist!

Be Selfish
Here’s something you don’t hear everyday: BE SELFISH. This is a time that you can really focus on yourself and how you feel and figure out what you love to do. Do things that make you happy and also try new things. Want to take a dance class? Now’s the time to do it. Want to start a food blog? Start thinking of that cutesy-but-not-too-punny blog name now! The world is your oyster my darling collegiette, so start looking for that beautiful pearl that is hidden away.

Move Your Body
Get movin’! Working out is one of the best ways to get your endorphins pumping and get that happy feeling back. Another lesson learned from Elle Woods is that, “Working out gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They just don’t.” We’re really lucky to have two nice gyms on campus, so take advantage of them! You’ll also have a routine down so when January comes and you actually want to lose weight for spring break, you’ll be ready! Need ideas on what to do besides running? Our Pinterest has work-outs for you to try! And who knows, maybe Ryan Gosling will pop by for another round of raquetball and will need a partner…

In all seriousness, break-ups are a very emotional time and it may be super overwhelming while you try to figure out your feelings. If you feel the need, contact our Counseling and Mental Health Center for support.
