10 Movies to Watch on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

This is for the single ladies.

There are those of us who use Valentine’s Day to empower – we create Galentine’s day, we buy our own chocolate, we complain about the inefficiencies of giant teddy bears. Then, there are those who can and will wallow. We cash in our invites to our own pity party. We can cry and pout and secretly wish we had a very large stuffed animal. Whether you are one or the other, buying your own chocolate will be involved. And so too will be a movie (probably). Choose wisely:

1. 50 First Dates

It can make us laugh. It can make us cry. Just like Valentine’s Day.

2. 500 Days of Summer

The opening title says, “this is not a love story.” All of us who have cried over Summer and Tom’s relationship know this to be false.

3. Titanic

We all want to be in love. We all want to be in love with Jack Dawson, to be more specific. We will try to convince ourselves to be a Molly Brown, but we really want is for someone (preferably Leo Dicaprio) to yank us off the couch and take us to “a real party.”

4. Sleepless in Seattle

Tom Hanks is dreamy. Meg Ryan is a classic. All the mentions of e-mail makes you long for something a bit more mysterious than tinder.

5. Crazy, Stupid, Love

One of the best rom-coms of the 21st century. Ryan Gosling’s abs and Emma Stone’s charm are electric. Us single ladies wish we could relate less with Steve Carell’s character.

6. When Harry Met Sally

Again, Meg Ryan delivers. The “will they or won’t they” keeps us on the edge of our seats every time. We wish we could relate less with the “I’ll have what she’s having,” character.

7. The Notebook

There is a formula to The Notebook that somehow pushes every emotional button. Old people? Check. Forbidden love? Check. Unconditional love? Check. Dramatic Kiss scene in the rain? Check. Ryan Gosling? Check.

8. Valentine’s Day

For all your Valentine’s Day needs. It’s cute and cheesy. More importantly, there is a Galentine’s Day featuring a ritualistic burning of ex-boyfriend’s pictures.

9. 10 Things I Hate About You

Feminist discourse in a romantic comedy? Yes please.

10. Breakfast At Tiffany’s

This movie is so much more than a romance. It’s an icon. It’s the movie that created the Little Black Dress. Audrey Hepburn is radiant and is just a little messy, like all of us. To this main character, we can relate.
