After teasing it for weeks, Olivia Rodrigo has announced her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love! As a major fan of hers, I’m so excited to see what this album has in store. After listening to her pre-release single, “Drop Dead” I’m already obsessed! To get ready for the new album, I made a playlist including the new song and some of my favorites from Sour and Guts!
1. “Drop Dead”
I love this song, and I recommend it if you haven’t checked it out yet! Many of Rodrigo’s songs are break-up songs, so I’m happy she’s writing songs about being in love too, especially a song that sounds so fun! One of my favorite lines is “You’re so, so pretty, boy I’m paranoid I made you up” because it’s so relatable to overthink when something or someone feels too good to be true. The music video was also really fun, and I loved the colors and cinematography. I especially loved Rodrigo’s outfit; I thought it was so cute! I have a theory that this album is going to recount a relationship from start to finish, given this song is the first track on the album. I would love to hear a linear story told on the album, and I can’t wait to see if it is!
This song was Rodrigo’s first massive hit back in early 2021! As the pre-release single for Sour, it succeeded in building hype for the album release later that year. This song is so well written, layered with so many emotions of a teenage break-up. The storytelling of this song is so real and relatable, recounting her conversations about getting her license with her ex, but then getting it after they’ve split. Another thing I love about this song is the layered sounds, specifically, the car sounds mixed in with the instruments. I feel like it’s so creative and adds so much depth to the mix of this song. I chose to add this to the playlist because of its significance in Rodrigo’s career, and I have a feeling we may get a similar type of song on this album!
Appearing on Guts (Spilled), this song is one of Rodrigo’s most vulnerable songs on the album. Rodrigo expresses how she’s in a relationship where she’s treated well, but deep down, doesn’t feel in love with the other person. She then explains, “But I’m so scared of my guitar ‘Cause it cuts right through to the heart Yeah, it knows me too well, so I got no excuse I can’t lie to it the same way that I lie to you”, explaining that when she writes music and looks inward, she can’t ignore how she truly feels. As an artist, I can relate to this song. When making art that expresses who I am and how I feel, I can’t pretend that something doesn’t bother me. One of my favorite lines of this song is, “So I’ll lay in your arms and pretend that it’s love” as sad as it is, it’s honest, and that’s exactly why I love Rodrigo’s music. I would love to hear this type of vulnerability on the new album, and I have a feeling we will!
This is the eighth song on Guts and it’s one of my favorites on the album! The song addresses the mixed emotions of longing and rage that one feels after a break-up. Lines like “I wanna key his car, I wanna make him lunch, I wanna break his heart, stitch it right back up” paired with the drums and passion from Rodrigo’s voice, show how complicated these feelings can be. Because I think the album will follow the beginning to end of a relationship, I think there might be a track like this one, but rather than when it’s already ended, it will be set during the relationship as it deteriorates. I’m excited to see if that’s true!
This is another one of my favorites! On the ninth track on Guts, Rodrigo recounts the embarrassing things she’s done because she was in love, paired with the raw emotions of regret and humiliation. One of my favorite lines is “Just watch as I crucify myself for some weird second-string loser who’s not worth mentioning, my God, love’s embarrassing as hell” because it shows how different her perspective is looking back and how layered her regret is. I would love to hear a track like this on the new album, but maybe a slower, sadder version rather than angry. I think it’s possible we could get something like this, maybe even as the final track that’s a retrospective of the relationship.
After listening to these songs and many more of hers, I’m so ready for the new album. You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love comes out Jun. 12, 2026, and I can’t wait to hear it!
