Ranking Boy-Band Albums, Part III: 5 Seconds of Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

And…..we’re back! Time and time again, boy bands take the world by storm with their newest album. These new albums are either absolute flops or so different and mind-blowing that they inspire two music-loving writers to put out an entire article about this band. We started this trend by publishing an article of our One Direction Album Rankings, inspired by our completely opposing opinions on which albums were top tier and which ones fell short. Then, like many other broke college students around the world, decided to splurge and get tickets to see the Jonas Brothers live (a decision neither us nor our bank accounts will ever forget). And so, this led to our second album-ranking article inspired by The Jonas Brothers Albums.

So, in honor of their latest album, CALM, we decided to write about our favorite Aussie band and, of course, rank their albums and songs.

From opening up for One Direction to touring around the world, 5 Seconds of Summer have worked towards making a name for themselves since forming in 2011. Their newest album is undeniably different from their previous releases, and while it still captures their unique sound, CALM shows the maturity of the group and how much they have grown since their last album, Youngblood.

We usually do our ranking separately, but after realizing we ranked the albums in the exact same order, that seemed a little unnecessary so keep reading to see our ~different~ song rankings!

If you wanted to stick around and read our fun facts relating to the handsome boys of 5SOS….

Darienne:

“I’ve been a huge 5 Seconds of Summer fan since I saw them open for One Direction way back in 2014, but seeing them live on tour in 2018 really reminded me of my boy band obsession. I think the reason I’ve been able to hold onto my enjoyment for 5SOS for so long is because I can genuinely appreciate the beauty of being able to hear them grow and mature as a band, from album to album. ”

Hailey:

“When I first started liking 5SOS, I found out about their songs that were not yet released in America yet (i.e, “Hearts Upon our Sleeves” and “Over and Over”) and listened to them on repeat on Soundcloud in like 2013. AND, my favorite all time song by 5SOS is “Disconnected” and before the studio version was released on Spotify, it was on their setlist when they recorded LiveSOS, and I listened to that song so often to where I know all of the speaking parts in the song including when Calum yells “Michael Clifford!!!!” before his guitar solo. I have been a fan of 5SOS for almost 7 years now, which is crazy to think about. I saw them for the first time live when they toured for One Direction and have seen them about 3 times in concert after that. I’ve always loved their energy on the stage and you can tell they put a lot of effort into their music. Each album they release gets better and better and I hope they continue to improve because they have become an extremely talented group of guys.”
