Valentine’s Day tends to be advertised as the “couples” holiday where most couples buy ugly stuff animals for each other and go out to dinner to revel in the love they have for one another. I was never one to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but when I do, I decide to do things that’ll make me happy instead.
Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to spend money on yourself. For example, I’ve been eyeing a shirt online, but I told myself that I don’t need it; however, I decided to buy it because it makes me happy, and I deserve to spend a little money on myself every once in a while.
A friend of mine once told me that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be limited to couples. You don’t need to be in a relationship to be able to celebrate the day. V-Day can be a day where you celebrate yourself and give yourself some self-love for a change. If you don’t like being alone on this particular day, you can also celebrate with your best girlfriends and make it a day about friendship.
If you’re having trouble coming up with some ideas on how to spend the day, I’ve provided a list of things my friends and I have done in the past and things others have done:
- Go get a manicure and pedicure by yourself or with the girls
- Host an anti-Valentine’s Day party
- Burn your ex’s photos and clothing he left behind
- Go out to dinner with your best friend
- Plan a Galentine’s party with your friends
- Have a spa day
- Buy yourself flowers
- Exchange gifts with your friends
- Go shopping
- Do karoke
- Plan a cute picnic in the park with friends
- Do a V-Day themed photoshoot
- Make Valentine’s Day themed drinks
- Go bowling
- Have a cozy night in and watch movies
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to seclude the single people,we can simply adapt the holiday for our own need, with or without a partner. It’s a great time to spoil yourself, or friends, and forget about the rules of Valentine’s. And if all else fails, play Flowers by Miley Cyrus on repeat until you get it.
