I’ve been there more times than I can count. I wake up, open Instagram, and scroll through countless photos of filtered, perfect influencers while I’m still in my pajamas with bed-head and morning breath. The more I scroll, I feel a weight settle on my shoulders; a weight of what I’m not and a longing for what I wish I could be, all brought on by post after post of seemingly perfect people living their perfect lives. For the longest time, this became my morning routine, my midday break, and my evening ritual. Open, scroll, and leave feeling heavier than I was when I came.

The day I realized I couldn’t live my life through glimpses into other peoples’ lives was the day I became so much better and happier as a person.

Now I’m not asking you to give up Instagram or to unfollow everyone you love to see content from, but let’s step back and look at our social media intake and ask what I believe to be a question that changed the way I consume content: Is my social media really serving me?

As you scroll through your feed, do a self-check of how you’re feeling and don’t be afraid to hit that unfollow button for the people who make you feel like less of a person. Are you looking up to them in hopes of being better, or are you looking down on yourself? Do they inspire you, or do they spark comparison in you? Do they make you want to be better or make you feel like you’ll never be where they are?

No matter the reason, you have the right as a consumer to alter your feed to fit what you need it to be. That’s the great thing about new algorithms and advances in social media, you completely decide what you see and what works for you. Take advantage of that!

When I started being picky about who I followed, I started scrolling a lot less, and enjoying the time I spent on social media a lot more. You have the power to do the same! Sit down and do a spring clean on the list of people you’re following, I promise you’ll be better for it. I’m going to drop some of my favorite accounts to follow so you can have a place to start fresh!
