What Goes up Must Come Down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

Bright is the sun that captivates our minds, our spirits, our hopes

Blazing through our insecurities and worries

Burning them away

But some will never feel the warmth of that type of blaze

Held hostage by technology social media runs them like slaves

Societal pressures trapped them, and they can no longer see an escape…

They’re caged

But I urge them to click the bait

Click here to opt of racist comments for the day!

Click here to walk around as woman without the fear of being raped!

Click here to block out all the stares you get for being male with a full face!

Click here to block out all the hate…

To live your life as you please feeling free beyond belief

To live in a world that’s judgment and cruelty free

For that is the root of it all

Like a giant oak that will wither away and die then comes the big fall

A country so grounded in injustice that we’re even trying to build a wall!

And for what?

To corral us all in?

To force us to face our problematic society and see how it has debilitated citizens

To finally have that talk about what it’s truly like to be American?

What it’s like to work hard just to get half back

To live in a country that was built off of your back

To make millions but never give back

To house illiteracy and faulty education but refuse to recognize where we lack

To advocate for the poor but retract

The healthcare that was put in place for their welfare

To loom over the minds of young black men, taint their hearts with bitterness

And teach them that fear is their new best friend

And if they think otherwise, then prepare to be pistol whipped

It’s like you’re born black in America and the entire alarm system has been tripped

SWAT bursts through the door to capture us as if we can soar

Like they didn’t already know that our wings have been clipped

Yet we will always have those that choose to reside in Hades

Bright is the sun that will pull us out of these dark days

And remember that Helios offers us a ride in his chariot

So that we may shine and radiate the warmth of the everlasting rays.
