7 Healthy, Creative Meals to Make in the Dining Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

It’s gotten to that point. That point where the luxury of eating from a buffet 3 times a day is no longer fun. You’re sick of the food and the consistent rut is eating away at your appetite, not to mention your physical health (we all know the dining hall isn’t a Whole Foods here). So when you’re in the mood to venture out beyond the bounds of grilled cheese and chicken fingers, take a look at these delicious and healthy options.

1. Taco-less Taco

Skip the shell and use the beans as a base for as many vegetables and toppings you can fit. The beans will keep you full for hours.

Refried beans, chicken, guacamole, onions, lettuce, salsa, shredded cheese, sour cream, and jalapenos

2. Wholesome Breakfast Filler

Rather than a high calorie bagel, an English muffin supplies you with the same bread base with a quarter of the calories and carbs. This creation is a great way to start off your day.

Whole grain English muffin, vegetable cream cheese, slice of tomato, fried egg, bacon/ham (optional)

3. Trail Mix

This is great to pack in a bag and save for later in between your trek to classes! You can personalize it any way you want, from dried cranberries to sliced almonds.

Pretzels, cereal, granola, almonds, chocolate chips, dried fruits

4. Tasty Tomato Topping

This topping is great to put on top of anything! It’s great on a bed of quinoa and lettuce, and especially fabulous over a veggie burger.

Diced tomatoes, olive oil, salt, dried basil, oregano, seasoned pepper

5. Original Whole Wheat Crust Pizza

Add on any vegetable you see to the pre-made whole-wheat vegetable pizza. Load it up!

6. Even omelets can sometimes get monotonous. Mix it up! Literally! Ask for a “scramble” next time and you’ll get a whole new breakfast experience!

7. Great find I heard through the grape vine: Veggie Burger Wrap (food.com) Make sure to get it with pesto—it won’t let you down!

Remember: don’t be afraid to mix and match things that don’t seem like they would work too well together. It works for fashion, so why not food?
